Used this tip and gave the starnut a fuck you. Adios.

So nice to see a frame like this cleaned up. People so often underestimate what some elbow grease will do.
I had a lovely old Mercian that the guy I bought I off was convinced needed a respray. With that frame there was really deeply imbedded dirt in the top surface and it looked totally matt, so I used a really fine sanding sponge that was worn out with lots of GT85 to take back that layer, then polished it with T-Cut and then waxed well, polished and waxed again. The difference was amazing and brought out a lovely patiener.
TL;dr: people clean you old frames properly before thinking about resprays.

please put a threadless yellow ergostem on this. (threaded one.)

Roboto, I have a 110mm Planet x -17ยบ stem - shiny black with silver faceplate (31.8 clamp) and shim if you want to test it out. Welcome to buy for a tenner of borrow until you get something nicer? Looks lookn lush. I do also have a 1" ITM stem with a weird ovoid tube - could suit?

Cheers. I've not really done too much to it. It was a bit grubby when I bought it and the starnut was the other thing that was bugging me. Now those two things are sorted I just want to finish building it.

I got put off the ergostem idea earlier in the thread and after googling for more examples of ergo and drops, it's probably best I don't go down that route. :)

Thanks for the offer mate. I'm expecting a 100mm -17 Bontrager stem to arrive from ebay this week. Will need a shim though, I need to check with my LBS first. Also, my choices have been limited due to me wanting to stick with my spotter bars for that authentic "old sized everything" kinda build. 26 bars, 1" steerer, 25mm seatpost...
I've got a feeling I might need to go to 110mm though and I would like a glossy finish to match the other components. I haven't found anything that ticks all those boxes yet though...

Ha. That thought has also crossed my mind. If you can find me an example of an Alter looking good with compact drops and a traditional geo top tube then I might be tempted to try one.

This is the best example I found (Pink Cannondale), but the drops aren't compact either.
But mainly they end up ruining the build, like this: http://velospace.org/node/45031

^ agreed you can't go far wrong with alter on a bike of this era.
Here's a pic of mine.
Again, bars aren't particularly compact....
Build looking splendid by the way, so classy.

Looking good. What's needed to finish it?

Looking great! (no pun intended). Heres mine, excellent bits of kit!

I'm waiting for a 1" expander bung to arrive and then I can finish the first build this weekend.
I've ordered a 110mm -17 stem from the States, in the meantime I will be using a slightly ratty old bontrager stem.
Soon.

That's a really nice build. I'm toying with the idea of deeper carbon rims. Maybe, if I can get some at the right price...

Initial setup. Rollers are great for helping setup the gears. I want the roads to dry up!

I promise to take better pictures when I'm happy with the setup and I can cut the steerer down.

what wheels are these?

Cole C24 Lite's. With the (not super, but quite) ugly stickers off.
They're really nice to ride and even though the low spoke count scared me a little at first (16 front and 20 rear) they are stiff and responsive. Just a shame that the anodising wears away in patches with braking.
