Haha nutter. He's probably got the skills to ride it. I'd be wrapped around a tree already. I used to ride rigid steel ss during xc 'enduros' which back in the 90s meant stuff like 6hr, 8hr, 12hr, 24hr races and would crash many times each lap. I was a road racer dabbling in MTB though, never really did more than turn up to random events on MTBs.

Any idea what it is? As the first OX Platinum Unit I remember was in 2004 and had sliding dropouts, rather than track ends

I'm absolutely clueless about details, I just know that I've never seen a single Unit for sale since I'm into MTBs.

Brief google shows it to be the 2003 Unit, so it was introduced a year earlier than I'd thought :-)

Konas certainly have changed over the past 18 years

I used to have one in an awful colour, I thought it was in 2002 because the next year 2003 they came out with a full suspension SS called the A (remember thinking I shoulda waited).

Two years older than I'd thought then :-D

I have a Kona A sat behind me.
It's not living its best life transporting the fat man to local pubs when I can't be bothered grabbing the Condor

I tried to give it away during the first Covid lockdown thingie!
No NHS staff were silly enough to want it.It now has new fork oil (didn't make much difference) so it's at least doubled in value :D

Any recommendations for 3/32 SS MTB chain? Normally I default to tester approved Wipperman but their 808 is £28 Vs £14 ish for the competition.

I buy whichever is cheapest when I need a new one. Last time it was SRAM before that I was heavily into KMC and before that I think some kind of commuter Shimano chain.

I rode it to Brewdog last night for 2-4-1 vegan burgers last night #dorkmodeactivate.
Do you want it? I was going to use it to ride the King Alfred Way at some point for the LOLs but that hasn't happened yet.
It has a ding on the top tube from previous owner, the BB is shot and it owes me £96.

I was leaning towards this option. Buy cheap, replace often. Some of the wippwrman positive reviews were discussing superior shifting which isn't a factor for my use.

Did it melt? Is there a charity to make the tubes straight again?

With proper knobbies that wouldn't look half bad
