Should the Nexus 8 be put in any particular gear when not riding? To avoid cable/hub wear etc.

That is not a thing.

I meant it in the same way as I heard that normal drivetrain should be left in smallest sprocket, so the derailleur spring doesn't stay extended for a long time when not needed.

Nexus equivalent is spinniest gear
Wait. Or is it? I can’t remember. Whichever way lets the tension out of the cassette joint

I've never heard of it on that basis. Even at complete rest the derailleur spring is still under tension.
My understanding was that you release the cable tension to avoid cable stretch which would put your indexing out. In which case it'd be as advisable with an igh* as it would be with a derailleur.
*Exception being a Rohloff where the indexing is a function of the hub not the shifter.
Whether or not you can completely release cable tension on a Nexus hub remains to be seen. I know with some 3 speed hubs (Sturmey and Sachs at least) the cable will be completely detensioned in 3rd gear and with a deraileur system you could either completely shift into the smallest cog where the mech would/should be sitting against the limit screw rather than being held by the cable or by doing a couple clicks at the shifter without turning the pedals thus letting the chain hold the mech in place while the cable goes loose but hubs like the Nexus, Alfine etc may always have the cable under tension.
TLDR: Don't worry about what gear you leave your nexus hub in.

Anyone else has issues with an Alfine 8 missing shifts? Every now and again mine skips which means I make about a quarter to a half turn of the pedals without any resistance, and then a loud crunch as the gear kicks back in.
From what I've read online it can be misaligned gears, but I've checked the yellow lines and they're bang on. It can also be the cable that needs a bit of lube, but I thought modern cables didn't require lubrication?

I'd start with lubing (greasing even) the cable, especially if it's cold where you are. It certainly helped last winter on my gf's Nexus (I used standard lithium grease).

cool will do. I guess some spray stuff will work best?

I found that the yellow dots being lined up isn't necessarily the correct position to stop the gears missing, sometimes it needs to be slightly misaligned to stop it happening.
I have found that the Alfine isn't quite as maintenance free and accurate as I hoped.

Yeah this. @kboy They are finicky and the build tolerances aren't good enough for the yellow line trick to be bang on. Need to fiddle with it. IIRC there's a shift in the middle of the range that pulls / releases a very small run of cable that's particularly sensitive to a grotty / worn cable, too.

I used Weldtite TF2 (tube). I was concerned it would be too thick but it worked a treat (and has been maintenance free this winter). Can't guarantee it will work for you, but I would think it's worth a try?

aha, makes sense. Grease first, then I'll have a play around.
-
• #265
Will give it a go.
Is it possible to apply it without removing the cable?
-
• #266
^ might be a daft question but I'd love to be able to sort this out without spending an hour in a freezing garage without gloves
-
• #267
You need to get the inner out, soz.
-
• #268
Could try unhooking the cable, letting all the tension out, then liberally greasing the cable where it exits the outer, then repeatedly shifting the cable full out / in. Keep re-greasing as you do it and hopefully it will be pulled up inside the outer.

• #269
I’ll give that a go!

Pucker Shimano shifter?

Looking for an Alfine 8 or 11 spd rear wheel 700c. If you've got a shifter for it, I'll take that as well.
Plus disc brakes front and rear.London based so can collect.
Have no issues with paying for postage if it's not in london.
Let me know

Has anyone had any experience with the newer SA 5 speed hubs? Namely the RX-RK5? I'm thinking about adding some gears to my disc-braked singlespeed.

There's an in-depth thread on the various SA 5-speeds from the resident IGH guru on the CTC forums: https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=135576

Thanks. That sounds like I'd rather steer clear of them. Does anyone know a reliable (read: I'm a lazy fucker and can't be arsed to do maintenance every 2 weeks) 2-3 speed igh? Oh, and disc brakeable of course. I really just want one lower gear for uphill sections...

There is a disc brake version of Nexus 3 and I have heard good opinions about S-A disc 3 speed hub (RK3 if I recall correctly).
If anyone is after an alfine 8 hub built onto a stans arch ex rim I have one I'm no longer using. Message me if you're interested and I'll figure out a good price if you can collect from Camden.
All in good condition.
