good thread, this.
I need to get kitted up for winter commuting. I have tights (Endura thermolight) and a winter jersey (altura night vision). Not premium gear but did ok on winter rides last year.
I like the idea of a merino base layer, and merino gloves.
Also need some kind of rain jacket. And a hat. And some overshoes as my feet suffered last year.
Might investigate the mighty G word.
Also like the look of this jacket although quite £ - anyone tried it?

Not tried it but have held, and quite closely examined, Cafe du Cycliste stuff and the quality is top notch - really lovely. Though I'm always quite wary of 'city' rain jackets cause ultimately they'll probably never perform as well as a similarly priced North Face/Arc'teryx/etcetcetc

• #337
Yeah. City stuff is just this crap halfway house between functional kit which works and normal clothes. You end up with something that still makes you look like a twat in the pub and does a below average job as a jacket.
-
• #338
Yeah, I see what you mean.
A full on walking type waterproof jacket would cook me so I need something that will withstand half an hour of rain but not boil in the bag.

Essential wintet kit:
- Bib tights without a pad - wear over summer bibs
- Leg warmers and arm warmers for warmer days.
- Defeet woolie bootie 6" socks
- Waterproof jacket (I've ended up with gore paclite and Rapha race cape - either would be fine)
- Baselayers - thin and merino
- Cheap windproof gilet
- Defeet gloves - cheapo ones
- Craft lobster gloves.
- Long sleeved jerseys
- Overshoes - Pro something or other
- over socks - defeet
- Rapha merino neck buff thingy
- Thin Icebreaker merino hat
- Castelli thermo headband things
- GABBA JERSEY
Pretty much covers it. My luxury item is a Castelli softshell winter jacket thing - for the really cold days.
- Bib tights without a pad - wear over summer bibs

isnt gym membership cheaper?
-
• #341
I do that too. Weights ain't gonna lift themselves. Cardio in the gym is so depressing.

Eurgh, gym cardio :'(

I just started riding again and it's cold when I commute. So I'm gonna invest in some kit. This thread is full of great ideas. Thanks guys. But is there an accepted temperature where I shouldn't ride. I'm obviously not riding when the snow comes as we usually get a couple of feet but what about ice and hard frosts?
-
• #344
No neoprene gloves or toe thingys?
-
• #345
So many variables it's impossible to say. But introduce ice and it can quickly be very hazardous.
-
• #346
It depends on the roads you plan to ride......lanes with ice around has it's risks......salted laps of a park/busy roads it has to be pretty extreme not be rideable
-
• #347
No neoprene gloves. I have a pair which I wear once a winter and realise how much I hate them. Just just turn your hands in big pink raisins immediately which get slowly chewed to bits by the seams.
Toe covers I sometimes wear under oversocks when it's cold.

I've really enjoyed wearing a nice scarf this week. Also rocked the berêt once or twice but that's for proper cold weather. Still too warm for full fingered gloves, but finally migrated from shorts trousers most days.
Special cycling clothing is making you look like ... 'cyclists'.

Rather than 'hipsters'?
-

I prefer 'wanker' to 'cyclist' as a label. I do both.
