Italians in snide comments about a Frenchman winning the biggest one day race of their spring shocker.
-
• #6056
No doubt. But it happens... I've seen people do it in chopper races.

Do we know anymore about where it happened? It's an accepted part of the sport to a) be motor paced by team cars back up to the peloton when you've been delayed after a crash and b) perfectly normal for a recently crashed rider to have his bike checked over by a mechanic as he holds onto the team car.
Both those ruses could've been legitimately used by Demare yesterday.

I did it in a Premier Calendar race once, for about 10 miles. Don't tell anyone.

Oh I agree.
But, apparently Demare was holding on up the Cipressa doing double speed.

Also never knew you race premier calendar! Cool.

This is looking serious. Will he be DQ'd?
-
• #6067
Doubtful. The commissaires have no evidence of wrong doing so it's hard to see what they can base a DQ on.
The media coverage is making it more of an issue than it really is. Riders get help from team cars in every single race on the calendar. The commissaires know this and turn a blind eye unless it's blatant.

Are you still allowed to hold on to the car while you get a mechanical looked at? I thought there was a hoohah about it last year?
-
• #6069
But why if it's always like this just really few times other riders complain about?
Do you agree with the theory that all this mess is just because a frenchman won the classicissima?
Are those riders so stupid to risk a defamation lawsuit against them just because they "didn't like" the winner's provenance? -
• #6070
Don't they look at it differently depending on the importance of the moment the crash happens though? It can be argued that Demarre wouldn't have been able to go for the win without the help, or that he had more than others who made it back but where fucked out by it.
I can't remember the Italian rider that got a time penalty for getting a huge lift from a team car after a mechanical last year-probably Scarponi-but it was caught by the helicopter so made for an entertaining gif so maybe that's why they cracked down...

chain tattoo of shame?

It was Nibali.
-
• #6073
Nibali. And that was a piss take, as he left the group he was in for dead.
Until footage turns up of Demare doing the same, he's in the clear. The Chief Commissaires was aware of the allegations shortly after the finish, but none of his team saw anything untoward so he can't DQ based on hearsay.

Also, looks like Demare's ride was uploaded to strava then deleted
