  • I’m just waiting for Remco to make this up in the TT

  • Good link. Seems a fair account of perhaps how the sausage is made.

    An aside ...

    ‘Zero Tolerance’ is always so hollow because;

a/ that level of absolutism just ignores reality and all it’s inconvenient complexity.

b/ anyone proposing ignoring reality has quite a low opinion of their audience right?

  • Disc brakes are infinitely superior to rim brakes, which is why Bernal lost 2 mins on the final descent: discuss.

To be honest, they probably use them to get lardy Pinarellos down to weight....

  • 2 minutes? How do you figure?
Don’t think he lost much compared to most of the bunch, Bardet caught up a lot but he’s well known as a great descender.

And Bernie lost at least 10 seconds being epic by taking off his Gabba.

  • Nah, think he was just rightfully cautious on that descent. Couldn't win the Giro there but could 100% lose it. It was on the chasers to take mad risks to eek out seconds, not him.

  • Couldn't win the Giro there but could 100% lose it

    Cliche alert.
Definitely said it myself to someone earlier today.

  • Erm, I was being sarcastic, Bernal lost bugger all because of his brakes, just a handful of seconds because of his (entirely sensible) caution. I was pointing out that the huge superiority of disc brakes appears to be less humongous than we have been led to expect.

  • They didn't save Gorka Izagirre today, did they?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSoXUZnk7SE

  • I mean if he had locked his wheels, he would have either gone over his bars, or skidded down the mountain anyway.

What wheels were Bernal on? They seemed to say he wasn’t on lightweights today.

  • They didn't save Gorka Izagirre today, did they?

Everyone knows that the limiting factor in the braking equation is the grip between tyre and road. Rim or disc brakes are equally capable of reaching a braking force that breaks that grip.

I completely understand why pros would use rim brakes where possible, as they are lighter etc. I don't understand why a normal consumer would bother with them unless they are already pushing the limits of bike weight already...

Bernal was on deeper wheels, apparently INEOS changed to them after they cut the first 2 climbs out.

  • I was joking. Fuck descending off the Giau on carbon wheels with rim brakes in weather like today's.

  • Bernal crossed the line on Dura Ace.
Without video there is no way to know what he was using earlier.

  • Clearly planned a solo descent and flat run in with the DA deeps.

  • Thanks for the Bernal cresting/descending footage link!

  • Disc brakes are infinitely superior to rim brakes, which is why Bernal lost 2 mins on the final descent: discuss.

Bernal had such a big gap he didn't want to throw it away with a reckless descent.
    Discussed.

  • Ah, yes, well.

Anyway, he wasn't on his Lightweights. He had a bike swap at some point, presumably for a bike with better braking surface and/or different calipers.

  • There was rumour he had a mechanical - did that go any further?

Of course it could've been he lost his nerve after that or he flatted on the rocks he rode over but Kelly was talking about possible mechanical.

  • He was on Lightweights (pink stripes on bike) and then swapped to DA (red striped bike).

  • Youtube video claiming his pink bike had a motor in 3...2...1...

  • Discs feel like more than a ‘marginal gain’ in this situation…

  • Stupid question alert! So do the moto's only stream/broadcast what they are filming? None of it is stored locally? Thought the highlights show would have more footage but no such luck

Edit: Just seen that link further up of Bernal cresting/descending which wasn't in the highlights show but is branded Eurosport/GCN, are they just really lazy putting together the shows?

  • Dan Lloyd said on Twitter they’re hoping to get the moto footage.

  • Can’t tell if all the Ineos wheel chat is troll content or not. If it was, excuse the following dross. It’s fairly well known that they use the Lightweight wheels for climbing stages only as they are, quelle surprise, lightweight but have a fairly old fashioned V profile that isn’t as aero. The DA wheels (wide and more U profiled) are used on flatter stages – and yesterday implies the DA rims have a better braking surface, too, which isn’t surprising as Shimano can optimise rim and block together. It was noted from the beginning of the stage that they were on DA wheels yesterday.

That descending footage was very cool. Bernal is going up and up in my books.

  • are lightweight wheels for sale?

  • I’ve seen some on eBay.
