I think the racing will be extremely spicy today. GC teams will be throwing doms up the road for bridging moves. The composition of the break will be fiercely contested as non GC teams try to salvage something from the race with a stage win. And both the overall and young rider competition favour aggressive racing. I think there will be a complete GC shakeup, but I've got no idea who it will favour.

from an Inrng comment:
A group of us rode up the Finestre yesterday. The gravel section is more mud that gravel, it was very heavy going and our wheels were sinking into the ground. I guess because the snow has only just melted and the ground is still sodden. They had a roller going up and down to try and make the best of it.
My guess is the race will be in bits going up there.:D

Wait, so this is the actual climb with its current condition? I remember earlier talks about the snow and possibility of changing the route, but look at the dirt! The motos and cars are going to destroy it

What time should I tune in today?

there's a handy timetable on the official site http://www.giroditalia.it/eng/stage/stage-19-2018/

when I went over it it was more sizeable, smooth boulders than mud because of cars/rain eroding the path so that looks comparatively luxurious. Not great on 25c's when you're knackered-you really had to weave about and watch your front wheel, but even now if it's soft there will be rocks immediately underneath.
Carnage!

Does all the current frames in the Pro peloton take 28c?

Can people do a bike change to wider /lower pressure tyres half way up Finisterre then get back on a normal road bike at the top?
-
• #17414
as we have seen on this year's strade bianche, pros fly over this stuff, its us n00bs going slow who have to worry about staying upright

I wish Aqua Blue was riding the Giro just to watch them do this on a single ring-wide ratio hipster wagon.

• #17416
Strade Bianchi surfaces get more compacted when wet tho, this stuff is loose as the proverbial goose and if wet/cloudy it'll be fucking baltic up there with shit visibility.

• #17417
They’re all on tubs and which will run with less pressure if riders want.

radio crackles through and we have news that Aru has abandoned the race plus kirienka.
-
• #17421
Yeah Aru has ended his agony. Real odd one that. He was so bad.
-
• #17422
Why was Betancur trying to get into the break, he was better off waiting. They'd have never let him go, he's within 10 minutes of podium.

• #17423
Also Sky having two in the break and getting brought back not ideal

Finally, a performance to match the strange rictus of his facial expressions which consistently look like a mask of profound physical distress....
I shudder to think what his sex face looks like.

Sky hammering the front of the group from the bottom of the climb. Brutal.
Froome to go 650b with Pauls?
