  • Frankly, I don't want cycling to resemble F1 or Tennis in any way, shape or form. They may be popular but they are dull beyond belief as televisual spectacles.

  • They should abolish the cycles in cycling, they make it too much like cycling, to be frank.

  • Ultra running is the new cycling - just without a bike. They've got the right idea.

  • There is no doping in tennis. Ever.

  • Maybe I'm old (fashioned) but, I don't need any rider's power meter reading or heart rate showing. Not even the bike cameras are that much of an improvement; nice for the recap/highlights show but it would be distracting from following the race. Better quality footage, tv-directors that know what they're doing, perfect rider position info and good commentators would already make the viewing experience much better.

And Oleg might claim Belgium France Spain Italy are stuck in the previous century but I don't care much for the races in countries whose inhabitants give f-all about cycling and just cough up loads of money to have a peloton ride around their desert or smog filled metropolis.

  • In Thomas' interview for eurosport after GW he said that tumble was a homage to John, who he described as the pre-eminent fixed gear randonneur cum grimpeur of his or any generation.

  • This. A lot. Oleg runs his team like a fan would, because he is a fan, but the financial limitations of the structure are clearly starting to bite, and his credit card company is following the Russian economy down the swanny. His credit card company being the teams principal sponsor and in his own words responsible for 99% of the teams revenue. He doesn't help himself by signing extravagant, well-paid marquee stars and clearly is frustrated by the fact his team has only 2 wins this year, to Sky's 16 and EQS' 18.

  • fixed gear randonneur cum grimpeur

Hey, what these audax types get up to in the middle of the night in bus stops is their own business.

  • cum grimpeur

  • Yay. All of this.

All those 'small races with no TV coverage' are the grass roots and bring genuine wonder to spectators as they come through. It is different to other sports and it's almost impossible to rebuild this culture if you let it die (look at uk domestic racing).

  • The only new race which has established itself and is popular with most fans is Strade Bianche, and that's mainly because it's a throwback to a bygone era. With the exception of the Tour of Qatar, and then only when the crosswinds hit it, the Middle Eastern races are dull and have next to no fans at the roadside.

The idea of creating new races, centred on cities doesn't exactly fill one with confidence for exciting racing. Look at the London Grand Prix or whatever it's called, I know Blythe won it last year but I'd struggle to name another winner and it happens on my doorstep.

I was going to make a point, but fuck knows what it was. Apart from the fact that change for change's sake is pointless.

  • Comparing it with F1 is scary. I used to enjoy watching F1 when it felt real, like teams trying to build the best car and then drivers trying to race said car as fast as possible. But it has become complete bullshit because it needs to be more "entertaining", tyres that disintegrate on-purpose to make it more exciting, kers, DRS etc.

Imagine something like DRS in cycling, a manufactured way of making more overtakes because it allows those behind to go faster. I can't imagine what the equivalent would be in cycling, maybe a motor that gives you a few extra watts if the audience votes for you, or tyres that randomly explode if you go over the wrong cobble. Fuck it, why not send half the peleton into the race from the other direction, arm them all with paintball guns, and make it a race to the opposite end.

Whenever you talk about cycling to fans they always talk about the history of the sport, if you start fucking about with it too much that history becomes something obscure and quaint rather than something that is being written in front of our eyes race by race and year by year.

  • motor that gives you a few extra watts

Cancellara already has one of those

  • .

  • Should be . . had one or those?

  • Oleg getting in on the April Fools action

  • Top trolling

  • A poor effort really. It would've been funnier, and more credible, if he'd said he was bringing in Manolo Saiz.

  • damn, he has even taken over the (best Dutch cycling) blog I do volunteer work for...
