The gap between tyre and seat tube will be tighter come race day.

Wow his hands are only 38mm apart!
Err...

Hmm. That's one of those things which needs very careful testing, you have to consider not only the drag on the bike but the power needed to turn the wheel. The closer the tyre is to the seat tube cut out, the harder it is turn the wheel as the air trapped between tyre and tube has an increasing shear gradient.

According to that bloke at HED and the other one at Spesh, most of the superbikes shield the rear wheel enough to make it almost irrelevant. Whether or not that includes the T4 above is up to the wind tunnel testers and power meter man to work out.

Seems the cut out kosher is all over the place by the leading bike engineers.

• #307
Wow his hands are only 38mm apart!
Pretty meaningless metric, look at the whole team (GB or Aus) and you'll see pretty large variations in hand hold width, presumably each one optimised for the particular rider.
-
• #308
Yeah, I know. Wiggo seems to have gone from wide to narrow and back out again so even for one rider it's not consistent.
-
• #309
I've often wondered this, pursuit riders generally seem to have their arms quite a bit wider than msot people on the road. Is it a stability/handling thing?
-
• #310
I would expect a world class TP rider to be able follow the black line wherever he put his hands, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the best position for a particular individual might change when you put him in a line with 3 other riders.
Also, a pursuit is a very short race, so it might pay to prioritise power over aeros - I know in the olden days when Doctor Hutch used to win every national title from 10m to 12h, he said he lowered the bars for the 12 and accepted the power loss in exchange for better aeros, since dropping 10% of his 12h power was much less of a loss than dropping 10% of his 10m power, or words to that effect.

What are those London 2012 things for?
-
• #312
Sandbags (actually foam blocks these days) are placed around the inside of the curves to prevent pursuit & kilo riders from taking a short cut.
-
• #313
I'm faster than Dr Hutch over 12hr so I wouldn't put too much faith into what that pretender says. ;)
-
• #314
In between qualifying and the finals, most team pursuit teams ride the Team Bunnyhop. It's mostly for honour these days but can sometimes win the team a meat platter so it's worth them entering.

• #315
I'm faster than Dr Hutch over 12hr
By 0.033mph, and you had 14 years of tech development on your side.
-
• #316
technology always moves forwards and faster is faster innit?
It's not like anyone would invent a load of silly rules to try and halt the progress of technology in the vain and misguided hope that all future records would be set on a 'level playing field' is it?
-
• #317
Oh, wait... is this the Hour thread??
-
• #318
Glad that you agree I'm faster even if you did have to resort to the devil's.. maths.
I think you'll find he had quite a bit of tech on his side. How many hours has he spent in wind tunnels in his career? How many sponsors did he have buying his go-faster bits when he rode that 12? How much time had he spent with the British team or trying to get on it or whatever he chatted about in his book? I'm pretty sure he would've picked up some decent tips.

My book 'Fasterer' will be available at the end of the month...

In 2000? Probably no wind tunnels, no power meters and negligible sponsorship.

"Probably".
He was racing for a team.
Did I mention I'm faster than Dr Hutch yet?
-
• #322
I might have a pop at this hour record. He failed but I'm faster than him and it's easier now. Thanks UCI!
-
• #323
Who needs aeros when you've got 5.5w/kg.

• #324

I look forward to the coming season, when you will doubtless be getting under 18:00 for 10 miles and 46:00 for 25. Or perhaps as more of a long race specialist, you'll concentrate on beating his 3:23:03 100-mile PB.

The FUCT boys are racing for a 'team', in domestic TTing you're lucky if you even get a discount on your skinsuit in exchange for riding for a sponsored club.
