  • That would make the Cycle Superhighway that's already dangerous to even worse to ride on if they managed to get that through.

  • ^^Stopping distance, sight lines, etc. makes it more likely you are hit by an HGV if they are allowed to do 50.

  • true, but an HGV doing 40 is at least .01% more likely to stop in time before turning you into street chow mein than one doing 50.

  • So it's either 20mph, or 50mph in London.

Wouldn't fuel economic/road wear be worse with the start/stop traffic of London?

  • No. Speed limit for all vehicles in a built up area is 30mph (or lower by signage). That's not changing.

HGVs are the only things limited to 40mph on single carriageways. Buses/coaches can do 50mph on those same roads. Cars 60mph.

    https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits

  • If I'm hit by an HGV doing 40, I think I'm pretty much dead. Should I care if they're allowed to do 50 ?

Yes, it will increase the stopping distance so avoidable collisions at 40mph won't be avoidable at 50mph.

  • collision aren't even avoidable at 40mph.

  • That makes grim reading.

It should be printed and stuck over all the stay back stickers.

Please can we make this happen?

  • Yes, because they have a rather better chance of stopping at 40, avoiding a collision in the first place.

  • If I'm hit by an HGV doing 40, I think I'm pretty much dead. Should I care if they're allowed to do 50 ?

They're more likely to stop BEFORE they hit you if they're slower.

  • Oh, there was another page already. Nevermind.

  • Please can we make this happen?

    Who does sticker printing?

  • Even just being passed by a large vehicle doing 40mph is slightly less hairy than being passed at 50mph because the effect of turbulence is more powerful. It's not unheard of for cyclists to come off just through turbulence from a passing vehicle as it is.

  • Usually much greater when being given a punishment pass teach us a lesson.

  • when burned by a punishment pass, apply keys to fender and pedal as necessary.

  • The LCC has put forward a good few:

    http://www.no-more-lethal-lorries.org.uk/

Drivers should not be sole operators but have a driver's mate with them. This would be especially important for major construction-related traffic.

Drivers should not be placed under ridiculous deadline pressure.

    .

Spent a morning in a tipper truck this week taking clay from Farringdon to Dagenham (Pics here)

Generally a positive experience and good interactions between people on bikes and the driver, He has eliminated his blind spots because of the technology and could see riders from behind and follow them around to the front of his truck. There was a lot off goof riding and communication and many people stayed behind him or passed to the right of the truck. However quite a number did scoot down the left ( and down the left of many other vehicles.

From the cab of the truck it seemed perverse that riders when clearly having the option to pass on the right, the road is empty ahead etc, many still choose to go down the narrow gap between the traffic stream and the kerb. I suppose cyclists link to the kerb, to the left, to the gutter is so ingrained that the habit is hard to break (though a couple of hours of cycle training would help many riders)

  • It's great what you're doing, skydancer. Engaging with truck drivers and companies is far more constructive than labelling all the drivers as negligent and dangerous.

Anyone remember the "don't be an undertaker" ads on buses? I thought they were quite effective. The habit is so ingrained, I think it needs a shock tactic to change it for some people.

  • Are you fucking kidding me? That's the level you want to troll at?

  • So you don't like the undertaker ads? Or you disagree that what skydancer is doing is great? Anyways, I'm off for a ride to the Isle of Wight, have a nice weekend ed.

    ^^
Hmmm I'm not sure who is trolling whom. if anyone is...
    (have a good ride William1984)

  • The Undertaker ads is one massive piece of victim blaming, which you though was quite good.

  • Ed you've talked quite a lot of shit this page. Not least that William is trolling - when he very clearly isn't and also that "collisions aren't even avoidable at 40mph".

  • Skydancer, brilliant work, think mutual understanding is important, I've driven vans for a living and it's no fun. The situation that these people are put in is unfair and the equipment they are given is inadequate.

On passing on the right - had an incident last winter where I got hit by a car coming out of a junction when I was passing stationary traffic on the outside which was waiting to turn into a junction, it was a one way st (so no traffic should be exiting it) but when I tried to talked to a lawyer was told I had no case as passing on the outside is considered dangerous. There was a cycle lane on the inside but no one in their right mind is going to use that when there's a left turn.

I was unconcious for a bit and needed a new front wheel so it wasn't a major thing but it's an issue if passing on the outside (the safer side) compromises your position legally.

  • Shit lawyer.

  • For motorbikes I think the position has settled that it's seen as contributory so any payout might be halved (i.e. if you're hit filtering past the outside of stationary traffic the car that pulls out etc is not fully to blame and you should be ready to stop at any time). But that doesn't say that blame can't be apportioned differently when one party is doing a dangerous and unlawful act as here... and in any case, having lower damages isn't the same as no case to answer.

    Tldr; shit lawyer
