I've been tempted on a couple of occasions to bite the bullet and pay for a full on bike fit - I figure it'll pay for itself in the parts that I buy and end up getting rid of because they're no good for me!

Yeah, there's that Footlab guy in Stoke Holy Cross who seems pretty clued up, doesn't look cheap though. It probably is worth it in the long run, although spending all of the money on one, and then being specifically told that you have to get rid of components/possibly whole build in order to get something that fits doesn't sound fun!

I've been considering this too, partly too see if current bikes are av"correct" size (and getting a new bike eventually) and also for cleat positioning. The guy who does Footlab is a friend of a friend and I've been told that he's nice guy. Have also considered Sherritt on here but that would be in London so would add extra cost.

Sherritt is hippy's coach isn't he? If you can attribute hippy's success to his input in any way, I'd say it would be worth the extra cost!

I can highly recommend Ritchey compact bars.
They measure from centre to centre and go right up to 46cm. I have the 44cm versions, if you want to check them out. Plenty of different versions, from the £20 basic alu, up to £££££££££££ for the crabon ones :-)

I'm converted to compacts now ( when I'm not using 28" + mtb bars ). Makes the drops a much more comfortable option for tackling those Norfolk headwinds.

All Steel 16: Oh the weather outside is...
December 14th, Meeting at 9.45 for a 10am start.
...delightful for a bike ride. None of this getting sweaty business like in the summer time, but all of the fun. Perhaps even more if you like a bit of characterful mud on your bicycle. And so once again, well spin along lanes old and new, have ourselves a bit of an adventure and be back in time for lunch!
As always, this Sunday morning's ride will be open to anyone and everyone, and we'll tailor the pace and distance to the riders that come along. A final, festive frolic before Christmas. Then cake. Carol and Christmas pop singalongs might take place en route. Do practice your favourites.

Cracking ride today chaps, despite a rather bracing start. Load up on carbs/cheese/wine/chocolate over Christmas, and we'll go for 2015's first seasonal recovery ride on January 4th!

Yeah you could say that.
Went something like; left the shop - cold - shadows - cold - sunny - nice - warmer - photos - even nicer - good pace - "this is really nice" - black ice - Matt down - @hudsoncjnr down - Bob down - Me down - face blood - pain - broken bikes - standing around - cold again - slow ride home - really cold now - back to the shop - bit better - hot coffee - better still - Matt in his dressing gown + kit - pretty much ok again - will ache tomorrow.
5/10 - would still do it again.

It's probably worth telling people to be careful around Kestrel Furniture/Reeves Corner on Plumstead Road if you happen to be out that way. It was all in shadow, so I'd imagine there'd be black ice there for a while if it stays this cold.
Would be worthwhile to measure your shoulder width and use that figure too, as apparently your bars are meant to be the same size. Of course, there's an element of personal preference, hence me going super narrow. I don't think you'll be able to feel the difference between sizes in a shop though, especially somewhere like DH, where they won't have a full size range in the same shape - the difference between some traditional road drops and some modern ergo bars is going to be huge, regardless of size. If it's causing you real pain, you're better off doing in properly - getting measured up and trusting the science, rather than just going by what you can find in a shop. Just my 2p. #internetbikefit.
