Hypocrisy anyone?
Do you?
I have explained that I regard religion as different from sex, sexuality, race or disability when it comes to what is acceptable or offensive.
I am attempting to change the view of the form re: the word 'belm'. I am sure that you are entitled to try to pursuade the forum that my user name is offensive if you wish, and if you are successful then I presume I shall be forced to change it or be banned.

Jeez, can I just nip this whole thing in the bud? People 'do' the belm all the time, it's been completely disconnected from Joey Deacon by time and usage. There, done.

I heard the word on here for the first time too and assumed it was some form of contraction of bell-end. I find myself edumacated.
-
• #30
I thought it was a hybrid of bell-end and helm

I am personally offended by all words that have negative connotations based on race, sex, disability, sexuality.
You can't be 'personally offended' by a word that applies to something you're not. You can be offended on behalf of other people, you can find it to be offensive, but you can't be personally offended because it isn't about you...however hard you try to make every fucking thread on this forum about you.
I don't like the word belm, just as I don't like the word mong - and I don't and won't use them. But, as you've said, they do depend on context and I think that context is understood on here.

Listening to the book club thingy on Radio 4 I was aghast at one panellist being all offended that another had given their child Huckleberry Finn to read without supervision as it contained the word Nigger. FFS what are things coming to?
No, now that I am enlightened to the origins of the word belm, I wouldn't use it. Nor would I use spaz or any of the other late seventies playground pejoratives relating to mental impairment. That is because I am a normal, rational, reasonably pleasant person.
I do however feel the the 'gets offended in case someone gets offended' shite is waaaay over the top these days.
If I am offended by something I say so to the offending person, I don't need someone else to do it on my behalf.
One of my O level english lit texts was The Nigger of the Narcissus by Joesph Conrad which is a classic and an awesome book to boot. I bet nobody gets to read it in school these days because of all this fuckwittery.

If we're banning belm, can we ban fucking 'chapeau'??
-

I thought the forum tended to be self policing and that sexist/racist stuff usually got shot down in flames way before Velocio had to deal with it.
On that basis and given that it seems to be working pretty well so far, I must assume that 'belm' isn't considered offensive by the forum in general.
Similar to others I was unaware of its link to Joey Deacon and possibly because of that I don't find it offensive.

i'd just like to add that as a forrun, i neither know nor care about 'joey fucking deacon'.
-
• #40
That's because you're a massive racist.
-
• #41
Can we also ban the use of idiot, moron, imbecile, looney, mental, stupid and jeez for the same reason?
-
• #42
now THAT's offensive(ly true).
-
• #43
Can we still use 'twunt'?
-
• #44
Or 'fucktard'?
-
• #45
oooh. cuntroversial...
-
• #46
No, I know a guy that might find that offensive.

I was a nipper when Blue Peter featured Joey, and believe me the 'mong' hand in front of chin thing started the very next day at school, only we used to shout 'Joeyyyyyy' not 'Belm'. Belm is a recent thing I reckon, it wasn't said at the time
we were OG 'Joeyyyyyyy' all the way

In the playground if a kid was ginger everyone used to chant 'your mum shagged a carrot... your mum shagged a carrot...' was that ok?
-
• #49
ahh fuck tard. the contraction of fucking retard i believe. who would use offensive language like that...
Most of the planet are alright, or they would be had they been brought up properly. I am perfectly prepared to say that the people who run the USA and the UK are backward fucktard evil scum and they're a shit-load better than most of the rest of the world's leaders.
I believe that a significant proportion of liberals are distinctly cowardly in their failure to condemn backward and downright evil practices (usually cultural and religious and all about maintaining power for men) all across the world. As someone who does not wish to travel to backward countries I am not at all well travelled outside western europe.

there's nothing H about your O.
can velocio just do a find/replace of belm to cunt on the db and we put this tedious argument to bed.
