  • Don't overtighten the cleat bolts!!!

They only need something like 2.5Nm (from memory they have 'click points' to help) and if you overtighten them you will fuck the cleat. It needs room for the C-spring to move.

  • I'll let you know if I die

  • ^LOL.

Mine were tough to start with but after a half hour I got use to them, make sure you adjust them so you can unclip easily. Don't want to much float and then you canny unclip at the traffic light and kell over looking like a right dick.

Hippy speaks the truth - three "clicks", no more. Or use a torque wrench, but the three clicks works well enough.

  • First I've heard of any clicks. I just tightened them until I was happy they were secure and not had a problem since.

  • Actually, my nature took over and I switched them back around. Not likely to die in a speedplay related injury any time soon...

  • Hello there, I use Speedplay Frogs on my mtb since 1997, and Speedplay Zero on my road bike since 3 years. Best pedals I´ve ever used. The Frog cleats are expensive, and if you use them for lot of walking in the city and commuting, it might get expensive, as cleats are 40€, shimano cleats are just 10€ and they last much longer.

About the Zero, I got them because I could not deal with the regular one side entry of look and shimano road pedals, so I switched them after just one week.

I regularly carry KeepOnKovers, titanium spindles for the Zero pedals and spare bearings for the Zero, all in stock in my chop in Holland. If you guys need anything let me know, we ship same day, always... ;-D

  • Tried my speedplays yesterday. They feel very much like brand new keywins to be honest. Not sure if this is because they are new. But I suspect the float to be smoother for longer looking at them.

Bit tight clipping in. Might of over tightened everything though. I gave all the bolts all the torques. I descended a local mountain with loose cleat bolts this summer. Fun, it was not. So I over compensated. I'll dovthe three click thing tonight.

  • @Mechamorgan I can haz mine done pls?

  • Yup! I'm a dab hand at it now. As soon as I'm back in London I can pop over and do them while-u-wait :)

I'll bosh you a text when I'm home

  • My speedplay cleats arent as far back as I'd like. Thats With adaptor, and Three bolt shoes.

I've looked into speedplay shoes. But I have wide feet, and it appears shoe manufactures make speedplay specific, or wide fit. But not both at the same time.

I'm not convinced they'd og any firther back anyway though.

So its time to take a 1000w drill to my Bonts. I have ordered the threaded inserts. But as the sole of my bonts isnt flat. I'm going to need to flaten it off With shims.

Are there dedicated, waffer thin, shims to do this?

I have the Northwave adaptor kit somewhere. That'll likely have something I could use. But I'd rather Return it and buy something designed for the job.

Grateful for any help here folks.

  • Which adaptor are you using?

Are you aiming for a mid-foot position?

  • I currently have the one that came with the pedals.
I know they do a more adjustable one. But I'd rather drill holes to bolt the cleats directly where I want them. It already feels like standing on stilts.

Not totally mid foot. But halfway there.

  • Ah, I thought you were using an after-market adaptor that allowed the cleats to sit further back.

I'd like to try mid-foot, but I'm not ready to take a drill to my Empire's...

  • Got some speedplay specific 43 Sidis which you can have if you want?

They're probably too slim, to limited in terms of foot position and too green for you, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Yeah. Too slim.

Think bont 43 wide is the sweetspot.

  • You could take them to a carbon fibre person and ask them to make you flat soles and then drill them, that way they look better due to no extra holes and you don't have to worry about slipping shims

  • I may look into that.
    Sounds pricey though.

I've settled on an exact brand and size that Works for me. So wont changing shoes for some time. Plus With Bonts you can replace anything that wears anyway.

I have some D-nuts on order. I'll drill my current Bonts, wack them in and see. If I'm happy I'll do my New pair.

I found a site With the inserts jioned together in a speedplay pattern. But no Stock. Everywhere else just sells separate inserts. I Guess Ill just have to be careful.

  • These are what I'd like ideally.
But as I assume they are a replacement part from when bont did speedplay. I guess I'm out of luck.

  • Drilled a bont shoe today. Just removed a bolt, drilled a pilot hole through, replaced bolt, and repeated. When finished, I removed the cleats and opened the holes with a 5mm bit. The threaded inserts don't fit as I need a 6mm bit. But it looks like this is going to be easy.

Instant speedplay shoes. Drilled exactly where I want them.

    Sweet.

Have some Vaypor Sprints on order. As well as metal protectors and aero cleat covers. Weird thing to spend birthday money on. But my feet will thank me.

  • Might have a pair of frogs up for sale soon if anyone's interested? PM me if you are.

  • Speedplay mod going well.
Bloody website I ordered the metal protector plates is bloody slow though.

I now have 4 holes with inserts, and am using the blue wedges that fit to the adaptor to compensate for the non flat sole. But the supplied bolts are too short.

I see that the metal protector plates come with bolts. Are these likely to be longer than those that come with the pedals?

  • I thought the c clip breaking thing was just because @hippy is so fat and has world chump power levels. Preparing to go on holiday in Wales tomorrow, and was about to throw my road shoes into the car and I noticed both fucking c clips have broken.

Aha, but I haz spares in the parts bin. Open them up and something looks odd, ffs one pair was actually light action cleats. If anyone wants a pair, BNIB but bag has been opened drop me a line.

Thankfully I had one more set if zero cleats in the parts bin.
