My right hand speedplay zero pedal has developed an annoying click, which is most pronounced when I pull up on the pedal stroke, especially when climbing. I've regreased the pedal, tried swapping out the cleat, re-tightened all the cleat bolts, lubricated the cleat and it is still bloody there. The pedals are about three or four years old but I've always been pretty good at keeping them greased. Anyone got any experience of this?

Can you recreate the click using your hand on the pedal? That would eliminate the cleat.
Actually, if you swapped cleats already and it still made noise it's probably the pedal.
It could be that the butterflies are worn and so the cleats aren't engaging as much as they used to, so they're a bit sloppy and the 'click' is them moving a bit.You can get bearing replacement kits for them. I've done a few swaps myself. Bit of a pain but doable.

Titanium axels worth the upgrade?
Stainless ones seem to do the job.

I rode my bike, then didn’t for a week. Came back to it and one speedplay is frozen solid, doesn’t turn at all. Was fine last time I rode

Nice one. If I push down on if I’m just wearing normal shoes it clicks too, just not as bad. Maybe I’ll swap out the bearings then, or check how cost effective that is vs just replacing them as they are already quite old

when did you last grease them?
Well, never. I just found it odd that they were fine then suddenly solid.
Are the bearings replaceable? -
• #1060
Pay attention!
-
• #1061
Presumably, see above. You're meant to regrease them regularly, tiny tiny bearings.
-
• #1062
Also, grease your pedals.
-
• #1063
Understood. Now, where do I buy bearings and how do I replace them?
-
• #1064
You can't. If you open the pedals up their soul escapes and they perish within hours.

I see. How do I save it then? Make some sort of shrine and pray?
-

Yup, then buy the kit from rolla bearings on eBay and replace the bearings. Cheap and fairly easy to do.

Are you using Ultegra 6800 cranks by any chance?
-
• #1070
Nope, Campagnolo ultra torque... why?
-
• #1071
I had a driveside click that I thought was my Speedplay pedal/cleat. It was actually the Ultegra 6800 crank delaminating which apparently is a known fault.
-
• #1072
Ah fair enough. I think this is definitely in the pedal body. Going to swap out the bearings and hope that fixes things

Checked you rear qr is done up tight enough?
-
• #1074
Wahoo buys Speedplay.

Maybe wahoo can make me some stronger c-springs
I have ordered - we will see!
