  • This is what i'm worried about. I don't really want to splash £20 every couple of months on new pads.

  • the pads wear out really quickly on the republics

  • Ive not worn mine out ever, but i guessi dont do that much walking in them

  • Other option is the specialized recon - I've got a pair and have been impressed so far

  • Was so close to buy a pair of republics LX (genuine leather), but then I read that the pads are in the way for pedals like A600 which is what I have on one bike.
Should I get them anyway and cut away at the pads?
Are there any alternatives in the same price range? I want laces and real leather.

  • I've got a pair of giro SPD shoes, I can't remember which ones I'm afraid, but they have the replaceable pads, a bit like a pair of dragons.

I had to cut the pad down in the end as they would let the cleats engage with the pedals. It was a massive pain the arse to be honest and nobody would acknowledge the problem, (Evans or Giro)

I wouldn't buy any Giro shoes again

  • I've got leather giro lace up shoes on time attack pedals, no issues at all.

  • Thanks.
    Size input anyone?
My feet are 270mm long and 104mm wide. Shimano cx30 are too long in size 44...

  • Just got some republics and am having the same issue with atacs. Any one know of cleat shims that work?

  • I just carved the offending bits away with a Stanley knife.

Annoying, but now they work, I've never looked back, and the bits I butchered are replaceable anyway.

  • I've had republics for about 3 years and use them on A600
No trouble, I bought a spare set of pads and haven't put them on yet but have lost a couple of bolts, so I replaced them.
Laces wore out after a bout 3 years

  • Thanks. I'm convinced to give it a try now. Worst case is just shimming the cleats.
Now for the size I seem to get different cm to size conversions with Giros own charts...

  • Don't shim the cleats out or they will wear out faster.

I have used vr90s, republics and rumbles with atacs

  • Thanks for the concern. I guess it depends on how much though. I want them to sit flush with pads, not stick out beyond them.

What size are you in republics? How long/wide are your feet? (you can answer in private if it's too personal)

  • Size 47 like most of my footwear

Very comfy. I always want wiggle room for my toes and no slop at the heal and they give me that.

  • I'm an 8 wide and my giros are perfect at a 43. Laces dial in the fit perfectly.

  • What is 8?
    I'm 7 in proper leather shoes/boots and 9 1/2 in trainers...

  • Easily explained, weirdo, that's you that is.

  • Haha, sure.
It's just that a size can be so many things these days.

  • Don't shim the cleats out or they will wear out faster.

Really? Why? More exposed to the ground?

  • Got this from Evans, haha:

    Hi

The length of the sole for size 43 is 10 inches for size 44 it is 11 inches, the width of the 43 is 3 inches & the 44 is 3 inches as well.

    Thanks

  • Thank you everybody. I managed to get the right size in first try in the internet shoe size gamble.

@dancing james I have shimmed my cleats out about 2-2.5 mm they sit flush with the threading blocks. Exactly like with my old shimano shoes. The bolts seem to have sufficient engagement too so what's to worry about?

  • what did you use as a shim ? I couldn't get anything to work satisfactory for my liking

  • I chopped up a pair of ikea safety plugs (EU version)

  • How are these for the wide footed/any other SPD touring shoe recommendations? Bought a pair of shimano rt5s but they seem narrower than the cheap shimano MTB shoes I was looking to replace.
