  • CK's are very cool, after hearing swedee's I do like the noise, but imo very overpriced, Mono rs' seem like they're very similair, just not quite as good, but for more than half the price.

For the rings - Spidering! They look very cool imo and will help drop the weight

And just realised you're on Speedplays, when it comes to a service, replace the spindles with Ward Ti ones, not the cheaper J&L ones though, that should help drop 60g off

  • Spiderring looks gash but I've heard it shifts better than Mk V

Come up on eBay cheap from time to time.

  • Apparently the only rings that shifted better with their matching group was dura ace 9000

  • the hope mono RS' sound much nicer than the Pro III's

  • Would nerg for ignorance but on phone.

Chris king bearings and manufacturing > novatech without doubt.

Whether you would be better off with 10 pairs of novatech or one pair of ck, I can't say.

Hah, bring it. KCNC > Factory 5; prove me wrong.

Obviously - Chris King make the absolute best. If money was no object, I would absolutely have a pair. Unfortunately, Novatec SL hubs are 1/5th of the price and slightly lighter. I'm not going to lace £500 worth of hubs to £100 of rims, unfortch.

  • I had a play with the King hubs at Bespoked- they had versions with a portion of the hub machined away so you could see what was going on inside.

For the first time I actually quite wanted some, seeing the quality of the workmanship and the thought that had gone into them.

  • Well, you have no evidence or research either way, so you're speculating based on what you assume from looking at photos on the internet.

Don't me wrong, I think you may be right, but where are kcnc made?

  • I mean, they could well be made in the same factory...

  • Eamonn has R45's laced to SES 6.4 and the fucking noise off them is unholy. Sounds like a spaceship spinning up and a buzzsaw when coasting.

I mean, I've worked with quite a lot of KCNC stuff with my last job, and I own a few pieces now. I rate them, and they've been producing high quality stuff for a number of years. I'd be happier to put my money with them than with Factory 5, although I'm certain both function perfectly adequately.

  • Wheel decision thus far:

    Flo 30 / 20H / Stealth Black decals - 570g ± 20g
    20 CX Rays - ~4.25 X 20 = ~85g
    Novatec A291SB-SL front hub - 60g
    20 Velocity Veloplugs - 5g

    Flo 30 / 24H / Stealth Black decals - 570g ± 20g
    24 CX Rays - ~4.25 X 24 = ~102g
    Novatec F482SB-11 Hub - 240g
    24 Velocity Veloplugs - 6g

Gives us about 1672g, plus or minus about 50g. That's not too bad for a wheelset with 600g rims...

Add in 44g KCNC skewers, 2 X 70g Latex Tubes and one 23c GP4000S (216g) and one 25c GP4000s (230g) gives me a grand total of 2302g... almost exactly the same as the Ksyriums they are replacing.

Is the improvement in aerodynamics and rolling resistance worth it? I can't really see where I can cost-effectively lose weight apart from getting lightweight rims, something that will completely remove the performance improvements that are more important than weight for me...

Big ups Kalloy though, this is a great (if fake) way to show off your lightweight gear.

Everyone does seem to rave about them.

I might be wrong, but don't you also need special tools to service them? Which means as well as the high up front cost you've also got to factor in paying someone to service them or the cost of the tools.

  • Yes, I believe you are correct.

  • I've ridden some R45's in the past, and they are absolutely lovely. Too dear for me, any time soon, but admittedly v nice.

This, along with a comment from another member (rogan, perhaps?) expressing their surprise at how very nice the Cielo framesets were irl, slightly confuses me.
At what point have Chris King Precision Components ever produced anything that wasn't brilliant?
I mean, I know Brits like to rag on US components a bit (Paul and Thomson esp) but you've got to hand it to CK - they've been doing what they do, near-faultlessly, for decades.

  • Without being exposed to them in real life they simply seemed to be more pricey bike jewellery bought due to the price and exclusivity.

    Coffee stop bling.

Everyone says that their engineering is without parallel- so it just washes over you as standard marketing drivel.

  • Is the improvement in aerodynamics and rolling resistance worth it?

It's significant. Whether it's worth it is up to you.

You missed nipples out of your weight calculation

  • their engineering is without parallel

My machinist once made me some bearing retainers which were without parallel. I sent them back and told him to try again.

  • 2 X 70g Latex Tubes

Vredesteins are ~55g each, and they seem to be the tube that everybody loves for reliability

  • ^^ If I can get £100 for my old Ksyriums, complete, it might only cost me in the area of £400 to build these up. I'm of the mind that it's probably a worthwhile investment, especially considering that despite weight, the wheels will probably last me a fair while as all-weather wheels.

For comparison, HED Ardennes SL + come in about 200g lighter for the wheelset, but are £900 and without the marginal aerodynamic benefits.

Seriously? What do you think of Hope hubs? Or Middleburn cranks?
Rather than 'bling', I've seen each of them as pretty much 'the all-round best' ever since they came to market. CK headsets were a must-have on most nice MTB builds in the '90s, and even then the absolute quality of them overshadowed their aesthetics - their rep has stayed rock-solid ever since, imo.
No marketing needed really, just talk to any shop mechanic that works with the stuff - it's fit-and-forget, unless you're a weight-weenie.

Hopefully nipples will be accounted for in the wiggle room from the above figures. It was never meant to be anything but a ballpark figure.

  • Seriously consider BHS hubs too, they could help 40g, have larger bearings so probably better rolling resistance? (not 100% sure on that though, tester?) but will almost certainly last longer when compared to novatecs sl hubs that have tiny bearings

You can also get CX rays cheap there too

I think Hope hubs are nice kit- I own some, and like them.

The CK equivalent of the Hope's I have are £650. That's a months rent. They're so hugely expensive I never, ever considered them as being worth the money.

Are they £400 better than the Hope hubs I have?
