Should Scotland be an independent country?

  • ^^There's much talk of what share of the national debt a newly independent Scotland would have to take on, I'm assuming that Scotland would have that as leverage in return with regards to for e.g. pensions.

Additional issue for the current government is that they've pursued a Sovrinty trumps economy line with so much vigour that international news such as CNN is running articles with titles stating that the Johnson administration is gaslighting the whole UK population. I doubt that any financial argument mounted by Johnson/Gove/Sunak will be believed.

  • I suppose you only need to answers to these types of questions if you assume any handover at independence will be as destructive as possible and all attempts at diplomacy will fail.

And why would anyone assume that with the current UK Government this wouldn't happen? :)

  • Exactly ^

  • Scotland would need their own Central Bank, to act as lender of last resort / controller of the money supply. Settlement is almost secondary. I'm not sure they need the BoE's support at all, do they?

From an exchange rate perspective, Ppenty of countries have their currencies happily pegged to other's currencies. Hong Kong has been doingnit for decades.

Day 1, Scotland could continue to use GBP(Scotland), and there's barely a ripple.

As far as pensions - it's not as if there is a bank account set up with all peoples' pensions saved into it. It's all very much money in, money out.

  • Im in favour of the currency being the Scottish Smackaroony

  • I would look further afield, to demonstrate a global outlook, and adopt the Dollarydoo.

  • Nah call it the Scottish Legaltenderpal.

  • Fan dabi doze

  • Based on Johnsons example Sturgeon should just brazen it out. Zero penalty has been applied to Johnson repeatedly misleading the house, so one presumes that the same courtesy is extended to others.

  • A woman? An almost foreign women?! Madness, she should never have been near power anyway.

  • Precisely

  • Liz interference, v bad

  • She's grand. The committee voted 5 votes to 4 that she misled the parliament. No mention of knowingly.

She'll get greetin' faced Douglas Ross /Barroness Ruthy (if she hasn't swanned off to the House of Lords yet) giving it big licks about resigning but they have been clutching at straws for years.

Doubt any of this is going to turn any SNP voters against her, especially given whats at stake. So ride out the bleating from hypocritical Tories and win the election in the traditional fashion. Jobs a good'un!

  • It's illegal to smack a roony in Scotland.

  • I saw Rooney play off the bench for Everton against my Dunfermline Athletic in a friendly in 2002.

    Smackeroony is my choice.

  • I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it. Although by the look of him he's had plenty already.

I think whatever the currency is it should have pictures of irnbru on it. And haggi running wild and free.

  • You, perhaps unwittingly, raise an important point. One that might sway those on the fence.

If Scotland were to become an independent country, would we then be able force Irn Bru to bring back the original recipe that it snatched from our heart diseased hands a few years ago?

  • It makes me laugh when they offer 'original' iron bru, when it's nothing of the sort.

  • The level of redaction in Hamilton's report is quite something! It looks like we'll have two reports with different conclusions by tomorrow.

Then cue up lots of dirt from Davis under PP in the Commons.

    Interesting times.

  • As long as she goes after Johnson for his constant misleading of parliament- other wise it would be rank, partisan hypocrisy.

  • I think that's a given in the lead up to the election which will get increasingly dirty and divisive.

  • Can't wait for some more nuclear warheads to protect our food banks up here in bonnie scotch land :)

  • At least 11 members of Johnson’s cabinet (including Johnson) have broken the ministerial code and, according to Ruth and Ross, must resign- I am sure we will see them turning their attention to this now that Sturgeon has been exonerated: https://yorkshirebylines.co.uk/ministerial-code-conservative-cabinet/
