  • And I guess the car carries the spare tubs?

    Hennyway...

    Forks :

I'd like something plain and carbon and light.

    ITM Pyro?

Nah, the car carries the ladies who made the grade. He's got a couple of cans of Vittoria Pistop in his back pocket. The tubs round the shoulders are just for show. After all, I did spot a few people on L'Eroica sporting the 'tubs round shoulders' look, despite being on clinchers.

As for forks - Columbus Minimal? Low key, 340g, 150 quid from Planet X. Works well with non-integrated headsets too, which many carbon forks don't.

  • Answers need to be quicker than 4 mins Dan, EC90 SLXs just purchased from the classifieds :

This is the first actual money I've spent on the build.

    The journey has begun.

    Yay!

  • Good choice. I've got a pair downstairs, next to the spare pair of 3T Fundas.

BTW, when it's done, you should come and do a quick Tuesday 10 with the EDCC lot. 4 quid for non-members, and nice flat tracks. As long as you don't beat me.

  • Damn nice forks.

    Deal.

Both on the coming and the not beating you.

  • So now I'm looking at silver components I'm thinking of gumwall tyres for that retro / vintage / modern crossover look.

I have Panaracer Paselas on my Bianchi commuter and they look nice but are too heavy and slow for this bike.

Grand Bois look lovely - http://www.compasscycle.com/tires.html - and light but you don't seem to be able to get them here. I might consider the faff of importing some if anyone has anything really positive to say...

Veloflexs? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/veloflex-master-20-clincher-folding-road-tyre/ - 180g and one review reports 2500km and going strong! 'spensive, but 2500km will probably be 2 years on this bike.

Conti GP Classics only come in 25s.

    Any other thoughts?

  • Cycliste has Veloflex Masters on the second-best set of wheels on her Roberts. She hasn't killed them yet, which means they must be reasonably sturdy.

  • I'm a spoilt git and have had Masters on the Goff for over 1000 miles, 1 puncture so far. bugger, I've just jinxed myself! Swap front and back round at about 700 to get even wear. They are superb.

  • Another +1 for the Masters. Roll nicely, look good.

  • I think the Masters look a strong contender. Thanks all.

    Back to cranks.

Now this build will have a slightly classic look are Andels good / light / stiff? I have FSA Gimondis on one bike and like the look a lot.

The other option I've been thinking about is Miche Primatos, which are quoted at <500g, then ditching the fat ring for a light 3/32 road ring that looks classic. Any views?

Other silver classic ish cranks that aren't Dura Ace bucks?

  • Oh, and I've paid the £300 deposit on the frame so the 8 week countdown starts now.

    Totes excites!

  • Wow is that the lead time on a burls?

  • Yep.

    Is that good or bad?

  • Sounds great!

    Buy my second hand 7710s?

  • Chop 5mm off the arms?

I'll probs never really track the bike but I'd like the option so I want 165s.

  • Is 170mm really a problem on track?

  • Where abouts? Those cranks have been ridden at Manc...

  • People whinge about Miche, I've never had a problem with them, strip off the rather poor original anodised finish and they mirror polish nicely (after a lot of hard work).

  • Specification of a Manchester Velodrome bike:
Track bikes must have a fixed wheel, 165mm cranks, and 280mm (11") bottom bracket height (measured from floor to centre of bottom bracket), no braze ons, and must have track ends

Maybe they don't enforce it, but I wouldn't want to go all the way there and get refused.

  • No mention of q factor so I'm sure there's wiggle room, maybe speak to them?

  • It all comes down to pedal clearance, so BB drop to be taken into account etc... They say 165 to be on the safe side.

  • And I may as well get 165s to be on the safe side too. I haz little legs in any case.

  • I've just added a table to the first post to show the weight and cost predictions. I'll update it as my mood changes and as I buy bits.

Sadly it looks like the original £2k budget is long gone.

By the time I've added some grease and the bits I've forgotten about I can't see how I can the weight below 6kg either, unless I compromise the wheelset. Which I still might...
