  • The goal difference doesn't mean anything

GD means a lot. If it didn't mean anything it wouldn't be in the league tables. Of course, wins are the most important thing, but the GD over a whole season is very good indicator of team quality.

  • yes but to sort teams with same points it is more realistic the result between their game IMO. That's what they do in lot of professional leagues.

You can be a good team that doesn't score lots of goals but yet win lots of games. Or just that they doesn't try to score as much goals as possible against weaker teams ... So yes, it is true it is an indicator but I don't think it should be the second indicator after games won.

But anyway, it doesn't matter now, the rules where set at the beginning and next year we can discuss that.

Good luck on your next game and see what happens!

  • Which sports?

Doing it your way takes into account the team-by-team result twice. Team A gets a point for a win against Team B, so if they tie in points at the end of the season then you need to use a different metric to decide -- since Team A already received the point for its win over Team B. GD is the most obvious one.

  • taking into account the team-by-team result twice in that particular case doesn't seem to be wrong to me. But that's just my opinion anyway

  • Seeing as Clerks have a pretty good goals against stats, I'm saying we should use that

  • Which sports?

American football and football are is the first~~ two~~ that spring to mind.

In American football ties in points within a division are decided by results between tied teams and then goal difference between tied teams and then total goal difference overall if I remember correctly. Yup:

In football it's used in the world/European cups in a similar way in the group stages, Again IIRC. Nope: wrong about the World Cup at least, it goes points, GD, goals scored then ties between teams.

  • Too much

  • @Antonio -- I know! Mods: Please remove this completely irrelevant discussion.

@Louis -- American football is stupid.

  • Westway 6 - Clerks 5. Awesome game in the sun. Thanks to Paul for reffing and maddie, fuscia and Jackie for goal refs.

Hope that settles the goal difference debate.

  • Oh boy!

    You were saying, Doc? ;P

  • ha just seen the goal difference discussion. Fucking hilarious given the result. Id say that Westway were arguably the strongest team we faced in this years league. great result for them and they will go from strength to strength. Underestimate them at your peril.

This also shows that in 45 min games with unlimited goals, goal difference is not the greatest test of a bike polo team's strength but is currently a handy way of sorting results...

  • Hubris is a bitch...

  • Where do you get the cream for that?

  • You can make your own, just mix up some hard cheese with sour grapes.

  • nice.

Right, those that have completed their games, who is up for team friendlies whilst we wait for tournament season?

  • I stand corrected!

  • Wish I'd seen & taken that £20 bet offer.

  • Awesome game! so much fun and much intense! Thanks for refing guys!

did anyone pick my orange ball? I think I left it on the court ...

  • I have it

  • Btw, there is no sense in which this result settles the goal difference debate.

  • That locks in the top three of Division II

    1. Daredevils
    2. Pubes
    3. West Way

Congratulations to all three teams, and especially to West Way for taking that third place with authority!

I will propose dates for the Bottom 3 / Top 3 tourney soon.

  • Hot Knives v Suckerpunch (Beagle or moog??? Please advise.)

    Ben has them

  • Hey Chukker, Daredevils havent played our final game yet so technically Pubes can still win the league if we lose and they win. No points are taken for granted....

  • Oops, sorry, I was thinking Daredevils had finished. It is possible for Pubes to take first.
