You rode into a badly parked car because you weren't looking where you were going?
-

Once the collision HQ have finished laughing I think you will get a bill from the van's owner for any damage you have caused.

But in your case - Cycle Training.
There is nothing in your post that sounds like you have any claim against anything other than your own poor riding habits.
It's good that you aren't seriously injured.

Friday so soon?
Was it a red van on a red bit of Tarmac, or a blue van on a blue painted route? In which case we may understand why you did not see it.

Hey,
Had myself a pretty good crash yesterday. I was riding behind a bus when I pulled out the left to find some nob had parked his van in the bus lane and on double yellow lines. I promptly went up a ramp that he had left out whilst making his delivery and went face first into the rear doors. Must have looked great but hurt like a motherfucker and caused a lot damage to my bike. The driver was not around so I took pictures of the positioning and his reg plate number. I then reported it to the police who are going to contact me when their collision headquarters have made a decision as to what action I can take.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of accident? How likely is it that I will be able to claim compensation for the damage to my bike?
Cheers,
TomDespite the van being parked illegally, I doubt you'll get any compensation as it reads like you were going too fast, didn't look where you were going and then cycled into a stationary vehicle.
I'd suggest cycle training, install brakes if you don't have any and offer to pay for whatever you've damaged on the van.

Just to be clear, you undertook a bus? You pulled into the left hand lane, where things are likely to be slower moving or stationary, without being able to see what was there? Or without first looking to see?
If it had been a stationary bus (i.e. something allowed to be there), you'd have faceplanted that and had no comeback at all. If it had been a pedestrian (again, perfectly allowed), you might have done them some damage and be on the other end of a complaint to the police. But it was somebody illegally parked, so your liability vanishes?

get yourself a really expensive lawyer and sue yourself
or use one of those " had an accident at work " type companies, they seem to excel at getting cash for pretty much anything

Reminds me of the time I endo'd into the back of a stationary van in the summer when my eyes were otherwise distracted. Was like something out of a cartoon
I can't see how you have a case here. But I would recommend more care in the future -

some
nobhard working delivery man hadparkedlawfully stopped to load/unload his van in the bus lane and on double yellow linesftfy
Without seeing the exact location and time, it's entirely possible that the van driver had done nothing wrong, in spite of the double yellow lines and bus lane. I can think of one drop that I've done literally hundreds of times where I can lawfully stop to load in a bus lane with double yellow lines, as long as it's between 10am and 4pm. or 7pm to 7am.So, in despite of the fact that you're a total bell end if you run into the back of an illegally parked vehicle, you might somehow have managed be an even bigger one because the van driver had every right to be there.

Poor Garbles.
When he returns to check for advice I don't think this thread will have gone as he expected....

I came to this thread to offer sympathy and to point him towards the advice thread that TW2 had already linked to.
But actually I just facepalmed and chuckled at the same time.

I confess I did smile when I first read this, but I also genuinely hope you're ok.
I'm afraid you're going to have to accept that you were at fault here and chalk this up as a painful and expensive lesson. To add insult to injury you might want to also prepare for the van driver to chase you for the costs of any damage to his van as you've already informed the police that you ran into him.
You'll have to excuse the somewhat unsympathetic response of the other forumengers above. No one round here as ever fallen off a bike because we've been stupid or careless so we struggle to understand when someone else has.

Garbles is actually the van driver on a trolling expedition.
When he comes back expecting angry lycra clad hooligan comments. And gets none. He'll be even more upset.
In my mind the rear doors were in fact open. On the live chicken delivery van. In fact Garbles exited via the drivers door with one balanced on his handlebars.

It's just we don't expect compensation for our stupidity.

Past two men carrying a huge pane of glass, next to man on an unfeasibly tall ladder hanging a banner, near the watermelon lorry.
