Another chat with Steve, everything sorted apart from paint colour. Hoping to start the build in Jan.
Anybody with decal/photoshop skills about? can trade for some technical drawing/light machining.

He told me he only works when he wants to
Now that's the life....

Straight or curved is a personal aesthetic choice IMO. The size and style of the frame also makes a difference. If it's small then I think curved usually works better.
The blade does make a difference, especially with the high/low trial.

At the moment I've went for a curved blade, 45mm rake to match the etape fork if I decide to go for it.

I saw you posted the link in the other goff thread and been having a good look.

The trail can also refer to where the curve start - mid, high or low.

If you say so.
I'm pretty sure most people will recognise it as the imaginary line running from the headtube to the ground. A la:

This is ready to go on, just need to decide on colour. Has anyone any advice on getting some decals knocked up?

been playing with bikeCAD while I should be working. As a man who is a bit colour blind and with zero artistic flair I'm pretty pleased with this. Thoughts?

Awkward question, but how come Steve's 853 frame only price is £600 (according to his website), yet even framebuilders who I'd expect to get better bulk discounts from their suppliers are wanting anything between £800 and £1800...
Cheap or cheap?
-
• #38
Because he doesn't do email.
-
• #39
So he's more time-efficient by excluding people who can't or won't spend the time to call or visit.
Makes sense, but it's still a surprising difference.

^^ that. I wrote him a letter, don't get to write enough letter these days. Also the 600 is a starting price, so that's a bit misleading. By the time I added on all the other bits I wanted he's still cheap but not *really *cheap.

^^
i think his prices reflect where he is based.
i beleive if he lived in a trendy part of london, had cool hair and full sleeve tatts. he would be able to charge twice as much.Re colour if it's lugged or you have a lugged headtube I would have the tube section black to match the other black panals. If not I think it looks good as is. If you wanted something different or a bit more mutted you could use silver/dark grey to replace the white sections.

going fillet brazed, else i think i'd be inclined to agree now you've pointed it out.
Does anyone know how much a 853 tube-set would cost from Reynolds? I assume the cost of a custom frame is in the time rather than the materials.
-
• #43
from what matt (talbot) told me when i was speccing mine, the price differences between the tubings are pretty negligible,
i.e it was only like £100 in tubing cost difference for 853 over 4130 chromoly

I think you're on to something with grey stripes.
Classic BRG
More stealth?
Where am i likely to be able to find a RAL colour chart to look at?

Bear in mind your monitor probably isn't calibrated to the same reference as whoever produced this chart: http://vintagebikecave.com/services/ral-chart/

Have you considered Telemagenta?

Have you considered Telemagenta?
No, its not for me. Orange though...
-
• #48
Plenty of design folk on here will help with some mock ups/colourings etc
I like the orange
-
• #49
I like the orange only it doesn't fit the bill of looking non-discreet though. Does orange look more flash and hence more likely to get nicked?
I reckon a metallic gunmetal grey with similar black panels would look pretty classy. I had this briefly, thinking a bit lighter.

I like the black panels idea.
and I've owned one orange bike and it was stolen....
As nice as it is to have a build "finished", the truth is you've got plenty of time to upgrade bits and bobs with any build. Even more so though with a custom frame.
