  • yeah its just the newest frame iteration which has moved to longer drop brakes. I reckon the sl will look top notch.

  • Interesting, did they change the geo/clearances? For next year's model? What about the current (2013) one?

Just seen they actually recommend medium-drop (as per the R650) here but I've got a PDF that says short-drops will work, though I think it's a rather old PDF. Hmm. Might just stick with the R650s then, and offer up the 6600 front brake to the wheel when I have the frame in my hands to check.

On the Bob when I had the 6600 brake I had a mm or two to play with but the 6700 on there now has the pads right at the lower limit.

  • I think they adjusted the clearance a bit as people struggled to get 28c and guards on. I certainly wouldn't be able to get anything bigger than my 25cs under.

I'm pretty sure it was just for the red one but I'm not certain. I have the old silver one with sram apex calipers. I think the pads are pretty much at the bottom.

They are pretty quick at replying to emails though so might be worth asking them. I could be spouting rubbish.

  • Cool, ok, ta. I'll see how I get on with the R650s first. I'm going to be running wide rims so there should be a bit more clearance with 28s than if I was using Open Pros or whatever.

  • im using mavic a119s for reference

    .

The Pacer and Steamroller frames use standard reach (47-57mm) calipers, although some short reach (40-50mm) calipers will work. We do not recommend the use of anything other than a good quality standard reach brake, including Sidepulls with 53-71mm or 61-78 reach.

  • I have almost exactly the same wheelset (A719 with Ambrosio hubs + CX Ray) as your with 25mm ReFuse (the one that claim to be 28mm).

There's a noticable clearance with the standard Tiagra brakes and the tyres profile look great as a 23mm look on a 23mm rims.

  • ^^ Yeah, I linked to that info Ed, but it's in the context of the 2014 bike that's on the Surly site. I was just wondering if that was a 2014 change in advice or if it also applies to the 2013 frame I'm getting. I have a PDF that says:

So, the Pacer was designed to accept 700x28c tires with fenders or 700x32c tires without...while allowing you to use standard-reach and long-reach road caliper brakes.

Anyway - I'm going to stick with what I've ordered for now and see what the clearances are like when I have the actual frame and wheels to hand.

  • It's likely you may only managed 25mm with mudguard depending on the brake, the normal reach brakes is likely to have slightly more clearance than a short reach version, but with the wide rims, I reckon it's fine as 25mm will feel like 28mm;

  • I built up a Crosscheck a few months back, which I love to bits. I'm using v-brakes which I hate. Would love to use the Tiagra road calipers I have instead. I wish I had gone for a Pacer now on reflection, since I don't really go offroad.

Regal I think your build is going to be great when it is done. Do you by any chance know the RAL code for that purple on your Bob Jackson? I am toying with getting my steamroller powdercoated.

As I said, I'll try the A319 / 28C Rubino Pro / R650 combo first. Though I would be slightly annoyed if that didn't work given Surly's claims.

Someone else mentioned earlier that Bob Jackson don't have RAL codes for their colours. Mine is what they refer to as Purple Enamel.

  • I emailed them out of curiosity the reply was:

brake reach has also remained the same. The Pacer has always had a mid reach (47-57mm) brake compatibility.

So apologies i must of made it up. I'm sure i saw it somewhere though.

  • Root, I did comment in your thread but I don't think you saw it. What size P clips did you use for your Pacer?

  • To add, I fitted guards to my pacer with 28c tyres easily. I just took them off because I didn't have the right mounts and stuff. They were chromoplastics, for the record.

  • Good to hear. The narrow size Chromoplastics, right?

  • I can't remember sorry, I can measure the seat stay tomorrow and let you know. Heel clearance is not a problem but I have got the pannier set right back on the rack.

  • If you could that would be amazing, root.

Yep - the ones that are made for 20-28s, I think.

  • Cheers JB.

Almost everything else turned up today - STIs, front mech, spokes, handlebars, mudguards.

However, I might have hit a hitch in that suddenly the two Surly dealers I was speaking to (Charlie the Bikemonger and Spa Cycles) have both said they seem to be out of 56cm Pacer framesets. Argh. Might try Activesport but I don't think they're going to be able to do the framesavering and headset fitting work, which adds a bit of grief.

  • Triton? They're a Surly reseller, try ISON distributior if all else fail.

For some reason Triton weren't on my radar, I didn't realise they did Surly. Thanks, will give them a try.

  • Though I harbour a slight suspicion that they're all getting them from the same warehouse.

  • They are actually. ISON is the UK distributor for Surly, but Triton usually keep a rolling number of frames in stock. I got my CC from Triton.

  • Just dropped Triton a line. Would be a pain if they're all out in the UK. Can't see too many good alternatives. Maybe a Tokyo Fixed Wide Open, but it's about £140 more expensive.

  • Well. Triton have the (Columbus Zona) All City Mr Pink on sale for £399. Right size too. And they claim the same 28s-with-fenders clearance. Would need a press-fit BB adaptor, but still, it looks pretty nice.
