  • Seattube is still troubling me.

My Cyclo seattube measuring tool is giving me a definite 27.2mm reading, however a 27.2mm seatpost will only go in 5cm.

I've been looking at this seatpost:

but can't commit until I'm sure. I've cleaned it up, I suspect I'm gonna have to ream it or use a 27mm seatpost? Will a 2mm difference cause any damage to the clamp?

  • I reckon you should ream it to 27.2 and then just use a fair bit of carbon fibre paste, also chainring arrived yesterday safe and sound, cheers

  • How far down the tube are you getting a 27.2mm reading?

Could it be that the tube has previously been reamed from 27.0mm to 27.2mm, but only 50mm down?

cool, thx for letting me know

How far down the tube are you getting a 27.2mm reading?

Only until the start of the 27.4mm section, that's the way the tool is designed; tapered to only measure the first part of the seattube, confirming that the clamp area is 27.2mm unless...

Could it be that the tube has previously been reamed from 27.0mm to 27.2mm, but only 50mm down?
unless this is true, in which case I will need a 27mm post to confirm...

  • why not just reem the whole thing out to 27.2?

  • So how long is the 27.2mm part of the tool?

Being a large frame, it wouldn't be unheard of for the seat tube to be more sturdy than a smaller frame, so perhaps it was originally 27.0mm.

Who knows why someone decided to ream it out, or why they only went 50mm down (at least 60/65mm would make more sense), but I've seen stranger things.

Either way, if the tube is definitely 27.2mm at the top, then I'd get the rest done: using a smaller post risks damage to both the post and the tube.

  • why not just reem the whole thing out to 27.2?

Do you know if Micycle have a reamer? CS Holloway don't and neither does work

  • No idea about Micycle, I know VBC does, but you know my opinion of them...

  • Hutch at Retro Di Corsa reamed a seattube from 27.0 to 27.2 for me before.

  • Hutch at Retro Di Corsa reamed a seattube from 27.0 to 27.2 for me before.

    wow! so skills! many ream!

  • as in what size seatpost it will take.

  • it is pretty normal that the seat tubes are only reamed so deep when they leave the factory.
I also believe that a seat tube can develop some burrs etc inside at the post edge.
reaming the tube is standard frame maintenance and not that big a deal.
stop whining and get it over with.

We've got one pal. Pop down and I'll sort it for you.

  • Thanks Andy, will try and pop down in the next few days - and bring the fillet brazed samples too :)

Here's the groupset just thrown on as a mock up:

  • Preferred the Rourke

    #sorrynotsorry

  • soz, but that stem looks gash.

  • Looking good. Would be much improved with some different bars.

Cinelli Grammo Quill with some Cinelli Eubios bars maybe.

  • soz, but that stem looks gash.

yeh not happy with the stem either, and I'm ditching the quill adapter for sure

  • Unfortunately I hate the ergo shape of the Eubois...

Here it is with a borrowed Cinelli XA/ Cinelli Campione Del Mundo... I agree a quill stem looks better, but in terms of bars I'm after dat flat transition from tops to hoods.

Seatpost / saddle also borrowed, I need a few more cm showing (but for the purpose of the previous discussion about reaming, that's a 27.2mm aero Chorus, and it goes in fine until just past the minimum insertion)

  • Anything is better than those compacts. Ergo bars are synonymous with road bikes of that era.

A black stem would look pretty hot. A black 1A / XA with crits could be a good option.

  • Is your grammo 100mm?

I will take it for the donohue raod biek if it's going/affordable.

  • I think either set-up look great, the stem look like it go well with the chrome lining.

I have to says, that Somec doesn't look "big" at all, like the other, look very nicely proportional.

  • But in terms of bars I'm after dat flat transition from tops to hoods.
