Better shape I'm guessing, not all compact are identical, some have a very long drop that extend further beyond the handlebar clamp, some have a ridiculously "steep" drop like the Bontrager SSR that I grew to hate.
Soma have slightly less reach (-3mm) and slightly more drop (+2mm). Either way they seem pretty similar on paper, so I just wondered if there was something in particular.
EDIT: Dammit, there is a WW thread on compact/shallow drop handle bars. http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=91575&sid=9e44328c0dc197a3ad21a304d352b00c&start=15

Why?
Better shape, much better finish, and much stiffer.
The shape thing is personal of course - I have quite small hands and the Somas feel too 'open' to me, where my hands sit in the bend of the M106 perfectly. I don't hate the HWY ONE (have run them on the Bob for a while and have no real reason to change - in fact I wouldn't spend the money on Nittos for it because it gets locked up regularly) but every time I ride the other bike with the 106s I think 'damn, these are nice'.

The difference in shape is much greater than those numbers suggest. The Nittos curve tighter than the Somas and go nearer to horizontal at the ends.

Cheers. Always curious about 26.0mm options.

Be interested to see what the Noodles are like, they appear to offer a fairly flat transition with a traditional-ish drop.
I think that a shallow drop would possibly look a bit odd given the frame, but that said it's getting latest-generation Ultegra, including that crankset.

I like mine. But they were just a bit big for me (48cm)*.
When you say latest Ultergra I thought you switched from 6800 to 6700 now?
- if any bigger people want a pair drop me a PM

Nope, 6800- was always the plan.
-
• #385
I rather like the look of 6800, it looks chunky, functional. Better than 6700.

Critically the shifters are the same shape as 7970, which is what sold me on the idea.

Black / dark grey groupset, black rims & hubs, Ti (grey coloured) stem... Would look great with a black headset and bars?
-
• #388
Headset is the (only) original part of the bike- a 7700 series Dura Ace which is grey/dark grey.
The Nitto bars are silver, but I think they'll fit with the Ti stem and seatpost.
Rims are a dark anodized grey, dark grey Ultegra 6800 hubs and I was going to go with silver spokes.

Is that a H+Son TB14?
I don't think they're stiff enough for Dammit's, but then, neither is a quill stem.

• #392
First I heard, cheer Brother Apollo.
-
• #393
that's where H+Son got the idea for the counterweight I think...
Either that one or the Excellence/Excelight
Anyway, TB14 is basically a clincher hybrid of the Ambrosio rims and neither are made by wheelsmith in scotland. Maybe the sticker just means the wheels were built there.

Thought nemesis were tubulars only and that these "nemesis clinchers" are a version that wheelsmith make themselves or similar ? They offer a rim called nemesis clincher atleast. Bit strange.
John do you know more ? Looks like a nice bike btw if yours.

Yep - the rims you see are the Nemesis clincher - they are manafactured by Wheelsmith (or somone he knows) and sold - ususally as built wheels on his website. The counterweights are stamped as Ambrosio .
I bought this wheelset fully built (with record hubs) - they were from his showbike.
That's my 953 Rourke in the pic ;)Love this Serotta build BTW

Ed are you suggesting that my 76kg is above the max limit for a pair of Ambrosio Nemesis built 32/3 cross?
Are they for pixies?
-
• #397
No, but the TB14 isn't the stiffest of rims to start with, especially when you're used to the stiff variety that make a lots of noise when you overtook people on Brompton.
-
• #398
Stiff rims. What the fuck are you blithering on about now, Ed?!
-
• #399
I think he is having a pop at me for owning a pair of Zipps, and being slow.
It's difficult to tell with Ed these days as he seems happy to have a (sometimes rather elliptical) go at anyone, over anything, all the fucking time.

I think it's more that this seems to be a long way from your 'dale. Old fashioned quill stem made from a bouncy material, etc.
That is a really sweet piece of work.
