  • You know that, I know that- but I bet Parcelforce still try to charge for it.

  • I got a quote from them- $1,500 including postage but not including duty.

    Advanced scheme then?

Regarding duties. I dont know about parcelforce but here i was told you file a form in advance when you send the frame out then you show it when you take delivery of the returning item.

  • Possibly- I'm not going to go that route though.

What is interesting is that it shows they have the tube- I have asked them if they would send the tube to Talbot for Matt to perform the repair.

They quoted $417.20 for the seat tube replacement, with $56 for examining it and $75 for getting the paint off.

  • Considering they had a lifetime warranty an all frames it would be strange if they dident stock a few tubes. Still its a big expense..

  • I really don't know what they are going to quote for the tube, it would be the easiest way of getting the frame back together.

Next question- Dura Ace 7700 or 9000?

  • Da7700

  • As the tube is special swaged it will have cost more to make from tube manufacturer and general practise in industry is to add a bit more on top for replacement / service repairs so I'd brace yourself for an expensive tube .. Really it's all a reflection of the high cost of these frames initially.

  • These are nice, but I'd like them to be cheaper.

  • Was hoping you would do a black campy build. But i like those hubs!

  • Well they've been knocking around his shop for at least 4 months, so maybe make an offer.

Then again when you compare them to the price of a set of new 9000 they don't seem all that bad.

It had crossed my mind, but I know I get on with Shimano.

To be honest I'm vacillating wildly about how to build this up, 7700 would be period correct (as would 10 speed Record?) but finding that stuff in very good condition is a) hard and b) it's pretty expensive.

Buying a modern groupset/parts is very straightforward, by comparison.

But would look out of place with a quill stem.

    Godamn.

I've got as far as deciding I'd quite like either Ambrosio Nemesis OR 20mm carbon tubular rims with Pave tubs.

  • I got some nice hubs for you if you go with the record group which ofc you should imo. Will be a new experience for you (?) on top of it beeing on a serotta. Win win.

You shop the wrong way btw. You need to start hoarding more. Buy when opportunities arise not when you need the items, will save you a bunch of cash, esp if you are going to continue to ad a project every other month :)

  • Hoarding eh?

    Buys larger cupboard

  • How bad could it get, your walls are covered in frames allrdy now take the next logical step and fill your kitchen drawers with parts.

Beware: this just ends in ridiculousness like having a complete SISL crankset with one of each available spider in a box in a wardrobe.

  • If it was me, that box would have a cat sat in it when I opened the wardrobe.

  • At least then it would have seen some use.

  • Nothing wrong with that howard, your problem is your not working hard enough on finding a frame for that crank!

  • If I did go for a modern groupset is there, anywhere in the world, a quill stem that would look suitable?

  • Black would help i think but yeah i think it can look good.

  • Get Feather to make you an oversized quill stem.

  • (it doesn't have a quill stem)

But I think this is a good example of what can work and I think it would be improved with a quill stem./

  • Not saying my bike is rad or anything but I have Force on a steel frame with a quill and I think it looks alright. I think the main thing is colour matching.

  • just seen the last couple of pages, terrible news about the seattube! Thought it looked like a seatpost may have been used above minimum insertion or slightly too small and flexed.

I think modern groupsets on steel frames can look good, im pretty happy with the athena on mine but thats relatively classic looking. A black campag build would be my preference. Dont think the modern Ultegra/Dura Ace cranksets would look quite so good on one of these which leaves you force/red or chorus/record but the parts you've bought to date are silver/ti

the blue/light blue fade a page or two ago is amazing, would be very tempted by that were i going for a respray

  • But they did a nice blue - light blue fade.

I think this is the finish to go for. Its a nice look, and a popular Serotta finish from the era of your frame.

I think Nitto do that nice grey colour seatpost.

    For rims I'd just de-sticker some A23s

For groupset. I'd grab the best shimano group you can get in silver. 105 5700 seems a nice chioce.

Finished with a white saddle, and some white bar tape. I reckon you'd have bloody nice looking bike. Yet with modern componentry.
