  • You will need to hire a bike, you cannot bring your own pedals... is the usual way of these things.

  • So if you don't need to hire a bike then is the cost reduced from £90

Till proven otherwise I have to believe that the cost is negotiable if we sign up as a large group of BC registered members. That said I shouldn't imagine that bringing your own track bike will affect the price much, if at all, as each bike would need to be checked in order to ensure it complies with set standards.

No filth on the track pls - so everyone will need a new chain, tyres and generally clean-up on all parts (especially whole drivetrain).

Good point. Don't expect to ride there on your daily commuter and go straight on the track.

That's news to me. This would apply to a complete novice turning up on an off the peg "fixie" I should think. I find it very hard to believe that you can't bring your own track bike providing it meets the set standards and it's in pristine condition. In any event this is something we can quite easily find out beforehand. But perhaps you've checked this already?

That's what I mean. Why pay for a hire bike if you have an adequate bike.

  • new chain is a tenner. No problem there.

  • ^^I emailed them nearly an hour ago concerning this issue, but still no answer. Wonder what sort of operation they're running up there ;)

Checking said bikes would still be time consuming, hence I doubt it would make much difference in terms of price.

  • I believe it's a tubs only policy and they can't be ridden outside. I've already started saving for a new wheel build.

  • I believe it's a tubs only policy

    Out.

We paid for the fucking thing, they need to stop being so precious and realise it's a public utility bought with the public's taxes.

  • So you paid for it, and now you want use it... How the fuck does that fit in with the logic of government?

  • Book early on a train ticket and you can get here in 2 hours for £12.50

Or do what I do and go there for work and then it's free :)

  • You commute to Manchester for work???

  • I'm in put me down for thee club. not bothered about the license just want access so I can have a go now and again

  • You will still need to do the induction.

  • So how much and how long does it take to get accreditation at Manchester?

About 4 seasons in total I think, ranging from £11-16. So less than London but depends on whether you can take them all in one day or not.

I have track only tubs... oooo but herne hill is outside..

    Whouuuattt?

    Argh...!! No! Balls!

  • I'll probably just hire a bike, they'll be nice ones and cheaper and easier then having/carrying a indoor-only bike on public transport from south london.

  • Think I'm just going to stay South. HH fi lyfe!

  • That's cool. We'll have a NLTCBMBC event there and call it the ThunderDrome.

Track bikes must have a fixed wheel, 165mm cranks, and 280mm (11") bottom bracket height (measured from floor to centre of bottom bracket), no braze ons, and must have track ends. Coaches must advise riders to check their own bikes before taking to the track, including: tyres, chain tension, wheel nuts. If a "fixie" bike is used, that matches the measurements above, and has braze ons or cast cable or gear stops, they must be padded with foam and taped over with insulating tape

Use Continental, Schwalbe, Tufo or Vittoria clinchers or tubulars (black tread only), 21 mm or wider. Tyres must be inflated to 8 bar (119psi), and the pressures, and tyre condition checked regularly. Do not use Michelin tyres or any dual compound tyres or tyres with coloured treads. Other tyres and tubulars may in future be recommended after analysis. Do not use tub tape to fix tubulars to sprint rims – use proprietary rim cement.

[] Do not use brand new tyres on the track without first preparing them thus; rub the surface with alcohol or white vinegar or other degreaser before use. Ride the first three laps on the Cote d’Azure or bottom of track.
    [
]No spare sprocket on double rear hub.
[] Bar ends must be fitted, and secure in handlebars.
    [
]No quick release spindles. Wheel spindles should not extend beyond the track nuts, front and rear, and should be sawn off flush with the nut, and filed smooth.
[] Recommended gears for novices, and all riders on taster sessions - 84" gear adults, 74" for 9 -12 year olds.
    [
    ]The gearing on Velodrome hire bikes range from 72.6" (44 x 15) to 83.9" (50 x 16).
[*]Gearing for all endurance SQT’s, including Madison and Derny, shall be restricted to a maximum of 88". It does not apply to Sprint or Sprint/Keirin SQT’s. However, youth accredited riders should ride a gear as per the relevant Youth category gearing in BC Technical Regulations.

You can use clinchers on the manchester velodrome.

  • They have Dolan hire bikes at Manchester. They used to have Look Delta pedals but do shoe hire as well.

    London will be Look Keo.

  • If you come up and need a bike to get around then this guy is awesome and will deliver you a bike to whereever you want. You can also get Bromptons from piccadilly train station I think.

  • 165mm cranks, and 280mm (11") bottom bracket height

Does anyone even check this if you bring what's obviously a track-only Trackbike?

  • I never really understand the 165mm crank thing - how is it any different to 170mm on >285mm bb height?

  • Crank length isn't even something the ever fussy UCI care about.

  • RHB might be able to help out, I think he works BMX track and I'm sure he knows velodrome people.
