I can sympathise with the view of new, matching paint jobs. No matter how well you paint-match to the track bike, wouldn't a brand new paint job show up the old one as looking a bit old, even if it's in good nick?
On the other hand - silver seat post! Look at those gorgeous silver cranks and stems. Matchy matchy!

- 1 for leaving the track bike paint as it's original and looks to be in good condition .. in fact personally I wouldn't touch the track bike at all, as it's a great build. But that's my opinion.
Also have you considered the Centaur steel seatpost, in think from 91 it's virtually identical to the Record Titanium model .. and a very nice post.

Centaur's a MTB group, it's not a bad looking post though.

I saw this recently at Herne Hill and it looked amazing.
I also love the idea of matching bikes but not at the expense of an already great bike.
That said, good luck with it if you're sold on the project...

My mistake .. Centaur was MTB. The road version was Daytona

Thanks, both new to me and both decent options.

Nice love these sort of projects. I'd go for a modern Record headset and some Soma HW1's (as you need two).
I think either you're right about headsets.
As for bars, I like the Crits on the track bike, so they're staying... I just need something silver and STI / 1a compatible for the road. -

Brilliant!

What is that grey bike with the nice brake bridge? I admit the Regal does look quite nice on there but still. It's the bloody studs on the bum bit - do my head in. Make me think of cowboy boots or something.
My vote for colour would basically be something luxurious. This is a project of luxury, not of need. I would say a very deep Dairy Milk purple or a heavy blood red. Maybe some sparkles.
It's Regal's Feather. More about that here.
Heavy blood red sounds good to me, might as well repost Skully's Geoffrey Butler whilst I'm at it:

Progress so far...
STAGE 1:
120 miles of spares-box build says it fits but could use a combined stem>bars>hoods reach of approx 1cm more than this. And these are the new road hubs:
The skewers don't match. -
• #37
how about some little differences like box section Omega's for the road bike and V's for the track bike?
^ are those Record hubs?
Somehow I had imagined Royce hubs :) ... for the noise if nothing else.

NOS Veloce 2004 / 2007: £60 posted for the pair, whilst silver Record / Chorus ones were going for about double that.
I had also considered getting 38mm chinese carbon rims for both bikes... but they're twice as expensive as Omega Vs, and apparently not 100% trustworthy on long descents in the clincher version. It turns out that Omega Vs are actually 20g lighter than 38mm chinese carbon, so the only reason I was tempted in the end was for braking surfaces that stayed black; which isn't the best reason to double my budget for wheels. Either way, I'll be getting the same rims on both bikes - matchy matchy!

very glad you're not going the chinese route. That wouldn't work at all.

Oh, i don't know:
20mm not 38mm, though.
edit: what's the seatpost here?

£10 kalloy off ebay - I'm long of leg so that's about the longest aero seatpost you can get.
Those are 24mm tubs - you can get 20mm, which is what I wanted, but they're about $80 more.

they look nice. Might make you faster too :)
-
• #44
It's going to take more than light wheels to do that.

Only 90.0 gear inches can make a bike go faster ; )

Actually a rather pretty seatpost!

It looks really nice in the flesh as well. Obviously no nice winged logo and fancy Italian name on it...

I'd like matching decal schemes, but I'd also like two bidons without the seat tube bosses getting in the way of the decal:
Could you not have two downtube Roberts decals on either side, so having a bottle cage won't be a problem then? I thought that was how it was traditionally done. Like so:
Would the Record Titanium Seatpost be an option? It is silver which would match the rest of the components on the frame and also looks similar in design to the Record Carbon Seatposts.

I reckon 20mm carbon tubs would look the bollocks, with some gumwall tubs of course.
Gaz, was waiting for this thread to kick off the project. I vote with the above to keep the track bike paint as is and paint the road bike to match (though I see you have already considered and dismissed this)....
