  • Recently had a customer come to us with a classic British frame which the paintwork had seen better days. He wanted to keep it as original as possible just clean and shiny plus durable as this thing is going to be rocked even in the snow, 365. We used a new type of lacquer which has the chipping quality of a diamond keeping all the patina wrapped up.

    All transfers where very delicate and the writing is all done by hand so we had to be extra careful.

  • Still after that pink frame? I've just bought a new frame and I'm from Leicester. It would be just a frame and no forks, but a bright pink frame has always seemed tempting to me...

  • 2013 CAAD10 in for some crazy paint.

    We acid dipped this frame a few days ago and rubbed it down with 250 grit paper.
    This gets all the factory imperfections out. Check out the inners of the brake stoppers, smooth as the rest of the frame. You won't see these parts when it's built up, but you'll know they are there. Devil, detail etc etc

    Why acid dip? Frames are getting thinner and thinner each year due to technological advancements and build processes meaning they are very delicate. Acid dipping safely removes the paint leaving just the raw material behind. A smoother finish also means we can lay a very small amount of primer on and thin paint. Thin = durable

    Summary:

    . Plumb-crazy purple
    . 1/10th silver mix to create the lilac (that's why the colours go so well)
    . Spin-drift metal flake 1/120 part
    . Gold-leaf (before you apply gold-leaf you apply what's called 'size' adhesive. The size was put on by hand and leafing put over it, no stencils)

    Next project:

    . Carbon
    . Fluorescent
    . Matte

  • I haven't seen it for about 2 weeks but I advised the customer for the toughest finish to leave it for another 2 weeks so next time I see it hoping it'll be built up!

  • James, ever done a full suspension mountain bike frame?

    Due to some idiocy on my part I have to replace my linkage anyway so contemplating a new paint job...

  • I haven't done a full-susser before but many hard-tail bikes. I cover up all threaded and all parts that don't need paint in them won't have paint in 'em.

    Assuming it's something that takes a real beating I'd recommend powder-coat

  • With frames over 531 tubing we advise acid-dip. Little bit more expensive but definitely worth it. The aluminium (or steel) would be perfectly flat giving the best quality finish. Lacquering also enhances this.

  • Purple track frame now looks like this! We acid-dipped then bead blasted it. Acid takes away every bit of paint, rust, grit, basically any contamination. The inside of this frame is exactly the same quality as the outside. To give you an idea about how soft acid and beading a frame is we use it on all 953 tubing.

    Other painters will burn a frame off purely because it's cheaper and easier, we acid-dip because we are 100% sure the frame is spotless and good paint is all about the prep-work.

    Contemplating a Chromaflair with a matte black fade from the front over the top...

  • Yes flair paint-work is no problem. The actual paint is rather expensive but over the price of a frame wouldn't be too much more. For this type of paint the frame has to be perfectly straight and smooth but we can prep frames no problem.

    Yes Chromaflair is possible but it's extremely expensive. 1ltr of the paint is just under £300. Those kind on paints are also very delicate and don't touch up very well. If you're looking for a show only bike it's awesome, just not for anything else.

    If you're wanting that kind of finish possibly a candy green with spin-drift metalflake and a tinted lacquer would provide a similar result.
