The Garmin port is very very erratic now I blame rain while charging. Any ideas how to clean it?
-
• #978
Put it in a jar with rice to dry it out?
-
• #979
Could be oxidisation on the connectors? a very gentle rub with something abrasive would get it off
-
• #980
Done that it is very dry.

Thank you. Bit better now scratched with needle.

they are pricey tho!
suppose it's buy cheap, buy twice.

Bet you could've done both races with batteries? Serious question. Since no more Luxos seems I'm fine with batteries.
-
• #984
I've scraped mine out with a small screwdriver before and inserted the USB connector a few times to clean it out. This was on an 800 with mini USB not the 1000 though which uses the smaller micro USB and is likely trickier to do.

The cost of things is quickly forgotten.
Being unable to finish a ride because of kit failure is not.
I didn't want a USB Werk as I've heard more problems with them but perhaps that's simply because when I was looking they were more common so: greater numbers = greater failures.

I could do TCR and TABR with batteries, of course. But then you have to think about that annoying unknown - battery life. Do you have enough charge to get through a night? Do you stop at Hotel X and sleep for 4hrs while recharging even though you're not tired?
I hated riding audaxes with my smaller light and running it low because I was never sure how long it would actually last. With a dynamo I don't think about that any more. It's one less stress I have to deal with which is worth the few watts they cost.

Anybody used the Shutter SP9 yet? Looks good. Bit concerned about power output but I'm sure it'll be fine. Annoyingly I want to pair it with an Edelux, so I have to remove the nice factory-finished coax with big spades (to replace with shitty small ones), which has stalled me a bit. Mine's still in its box, haven't got round to building the wheelset either (mostly because I'm frightened of tubeless, but that's another thread...)

I piciked up Velocharger Hub recently to keep my mobile juiced whilst on tour.
http://www.adeptelectronics.co.uk/velohub.html
It worked really well for mobile but didn't have so much luck charging my external battery pack or my USB charged bike light - but figure these are likely to be due to limits of current output from dynamo. Not the prettiest but would recommend. Kept on top tube with mobile charging in frame bag.
Can see myself getting Quad lock mobile phone mount combined with waterproof mobile phone and you're away laughing

Sp able to charge and have lights on this morning on my (very wet) commute with my SP9 and IQ2 Luxos U.

Saw this:

@hippy @skinny would this possibly be of use to you guys for ultra stuff? Switchable dynamo hub, so that resistance when not in use is nearly that of a normal hub -
• #992
Switchable hubs have been around a while I think but they're not that common and I think they were considered unreliable (or less reliable) due to the extra bits and pieces needed to make them work. It's only ~1W off and 6W on anyway for their normal hubs.
-
• #993
Yeah pretty useless for most people, I just figured you guys who ride for many hours a day on dyno hubs not in use, it may be worth it. Marginal gains init. Otherwise you're just touring ;)
-
• #994
Your a touring
-
• #995
Fair point
-
• #996
Resistance of a son hub when dynamo not on is negligible. I couldn't tell the different in speed/power on rollers.
-
• #997
Yeah gotcha. But there is some extra resistance because magnets/science.
I suppose until ultra races are won in seconds rather than minutes/hours, the amount of time saved would be pointless -
• #998
Negligible. Oh and you'll loose more time when that SP stops working. Honestly I can't see it in speed/power, it's so small.
I bet you'd lose more time stopping to turn that thing on/off than with a SON dynamo.
-
• #999
Oh you're one of THOSE people now. SONs have failed too you know?
I'm still yet to have issues with my SPs and I've put more miles into them than you have SON hubs at a much higher "load" too.

waits for Frank to join in about batteries...
I've got a prototype D1 that is still working so, yeah, pretty reliable :)
I don't know much about the new versions but I've certainly no reason to doubt their usefulness given my experience with the initial version.
