I never really spin my wheels like that. Unless it's noticeable when I'm riding I don't care. I know the dyno hubs I've had never spun very freely by hand so I've never really thought much of it. Mind you, I killed an MTB hub that was binding with that attitude so perhaps I'm not the best person to get advice from :)
I know some people have done tear downs so maybe it's something you could try to inspect bearings?

Yeah it's not something I've ever had issues with before, I know they feel deceptively resistant when you spin them by hand. I think it's mainly the fact that it is noticeably worse so something has changed, also the noise definitely doesn't sound happy. It's still under warranty so might as well explore that route...

Warranty? Deffo makes sense then, if you can part with the wheel for sure.
-
• #1380
Supposedly the hubs have a 2 year warranty on them, the wheel is little over a year old.
Yeah got some non dynamo wheels I can swap in if needed!

I'm kinda screwed since I only have one TA dynamo disc wheel. Oh, actually I just realised my missus now has TA wheels so I could steel her non-dynamo wheels if needed. Phew!

Any recommendations for battery packs that'll work well for charging at low speeds with loaded off-road bicycles?

I've found this site very useful for recommendations and stats.
Apologies if link has been put up before. -

@oat44 I’m responding to your post about four months ago... about whether your sp8 is making less power than your xt one.
They do all vary a bit. IME B&M lights (well, I’m comparing Luxos to Edelux and E3ii) seem to have a much beefier capacitor output than other lights, so the flicker on climbs is less noticeable or possibly not there at all. Were you comparing your setups with various lights as well as hubs?

New thru axle offering from shimano

I have a Supernova The Plug III which doesn't seem to charge anything at all, with the exception of one bicycle light, which charges very intermittently.
The green LED comes on with nothing plugged in, but when anything's connected, regardless of speed, no charging happens and the LED flashes. Most reviews seem to suggest 5V should be hit around 12kph, and I'd certainly hope I've exceeded that. Looks like a faulty unit, but anything I could be overlooking?

Thanks @Skülly! Have to say that after riding a season on it, the strobe effect (at walking pace) is not so bothersome, and I think there probably wasn't so much difference powerwise between the two hubs in the end. With both hubs (shimano xt and SP 8) I used the Lumotec T Senso Plus which is probably not as powerful, capacitor wise, as you were talking about, but for me is perfectly fine for trying to make it through unlit Victoria Park before the gates shut.
On the whole I'm very happy with the whole thing and would be very sad if I ever had to go back to batteries.
Threading the wire through the front CdF fork was a fun exercise too!

I rode through around 2 weeks of a tour trying to trickle charge a battery pack with my B&M luxos U. It turned out my hub didn't generate enough power to power both the light and the charging device at once - this could be your problem too?

I have a SP PL-8X hub. Does anyone know if it's possible to swap out the thru axle and change if for QR?
-
• #1390
I bought an adaptor on ebay and ran my 12mm thru as a QR. Was basically a tube.

• #1391
Makes sense I guess. Have you got any links?
-
• #1393
Yeah, I've run one for years.

Is there forum approved battery that can do pass through charging and works well with a dynamo?
-
• #1396
Also curious

I have no experience with this but Anker seem like the favoured choice on the Ultra groups.
-
• #1398
Cheers will look. Annoyingly I ideally want one that's got a USB-C out
-
• #1399
Yeah I've never had any trouble with Anker, just got a cheap £10 job but allowed pass through charging no issues

Has anyone experienced Shimano SP Dynamo judder? It's becoming really noticeable... i've checked headset, checked the wheel is
Yeah still generates power, just about 10 times the resistance it used to have...
It only takes a few seconds for the wheel to come to a complete halt when I spin it in the forks whereas my other SP hub spins much much longer...
