Dynamo hubs

  • "rear"
Supernova rear won't work connected direct to hub, has to go from supernova front light.

  • What do you mean by "bit slow"?

  • Probably that someone had already mentioned SP dynamo above his posts. As in "I was a bit slow responding but here's my opinion anyway".

  • Hey folks. Two questions:

    • I cant find any 24 holes shutter precision dynamo hub. I'm running disc and would love something black or blue or red. I can't find it available anywhere with quick release. Any idea ?
    • according to you what is the best rear light running on an Axa 50 blueline in front? I love the supernova one I've got on my roadie but I heard it was not compatible with any other brand and I'm ok with my Axa blueline for this bike.

Dunno about colours but they make 24h, they make 6-bolt and CenterLock hubs and they make hubs for QR or Thru-Axle (see the PD-8X and PL-8X I think)

  • Oh my bad. Have you ordered it yet ?

  • I'm 94kg. Ain't no way I'm running a 24h dyno hub. :)

  • FYI others have expressed concerned about 24H builds with dyno hubs upthread, them being too flexy apparently.

Re the rear light it should be fine. If you want to be sure, check the voltage output of the axa light with a multimeter against what the supernova rear is supposed to take. (but didn't you have a supernova front light anyway?)

  • I am considering to buy a rear supernova light only because I like the Axa blueline 50 in front on a new bike.

  • It is really shitty because I have a 24/28 carbon rims awaiting to be built...
I might try though since I don't have any other option ( I'm a 75kilos and running 24 in rear seems pretty strange to me)

  • I read previous messages, but couldn't find a clue on how they are slow. And i haven't expressed any opinion, I am just curious about this hubs, and people's experiences.

  • No no no, the hubs aren't slow. Ed's post was indicating that he was slow posting a reply. Nothing to do with the hubs.

  • What are the good dynamo hub options beyond SON? Needs to be good enough to charge a small battery pack and power lights, not at same time.

SP do a thru axle not sure if they go as low as 20 hole though. I have two and they're great running revo front and red eye rear lights

    SP Dynamo?

bit slow, they do centre lock and thru axles, but no less than 32h.

  • Okay +hippy
Actually, I was trying to find +edscoble's message that i replied. Thanks for clarifying.
I have read all the comments in this section. But when i tried today i must have found myself at #99

  • If you click his name on your reply it should jump you back to that point in the thread.

  • What depth rim? 24H is quite standard on the rear for 50mm

  • On the kind of bikes that generally have dynamos fitted to them, low spoke count wheels are usually not the most sensible choice. If you already have a rim to use then by all means. If you're using it on nice roads and your light, sure. Personally, being a fatty and racing stupid distances over stupid terrains I will stick with 32h when possible. I do have lower spoke count wheels but I do like not having to worry about any durability issues... at least until I crash them :)

  • Indeed, but I figure if he's 75kg and audaxing it's probably safe enough. I certainly wouldn't want to do endurance races on my 24/20 Reynolds 46, but I didn't worry about light touring in France with a Carradice.

  • Yeah, I used 18h/20h? Ksyriums for a while since they came stock with my Tarmac. Never had any issues with them. As well as weight, it does depend on how observant you are, how quick you react to potholes, etc.

  • I'm endurance rider too. Audaxing and bilepacking light. I ride a fixed gear and plan to build 38mm rims because my ride in June is a 1200km potentially windy race. But I have also a pair of 50mm rims... It may be to much with side wind and apidura half frame bag

  • @cgg installing a rear supernova on an Axe or BM light deletes the parking light, right ?

  • Yes, because the supernova doesn't have a cache battery and relies on the front unit to provide juice when at rest.

  • Rear supernova light >>>all others mounting without a rack
