Last Ergo rebuild thread I remember .. http://www.lfgss.com/thread102530.html
Could also have a look at http://www.campyonly.com/ as I'm sure I've seen a how to rebuild on there. In the past

Thanks for that, most useful!

our cousins over at ctc have also found a source of ergo lever spares > http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=45120
and, forgot about clements cycles > http://www.lfgss.com/post2793446-509.html
changing springs and ratchets is not that hard, the campyonly link shows how it's done; there may also be a park tool tutorial

Being idle, I just swapped out the Chorus Ergo for a Veloce for the rest of the Summer.
Now that I've packed the gears away for the Winter, I thought it would be a good opportunity to tackle the wonky shifter, but not only have I fallen at the first hurdle, I've managed to bork the Veloce too...
I flipped off the plastic cover to reveal the the Allen head bolt I assume needs undoing to extract the guts, but my 4mm key won't grip.
I decided to check the Veloce to see if I was missing something: the key gripped, but instead of undoing the bolt, I turned the thumb shift and the return spring popped out.
Fu...
Have I missed something obvious (apart from my cackhandedness) or am I just unlucky and need to recruit a professional?

At the risk of being over-commercial in a posting here, it sounds as if you might be best advised to send both shifters to us and we can have a look for you.
Normally the 4mm head bolts will move readily enough - it may be that:
- the central securing bolt in shifter #1 had been replaced with a Torx head bolt from a Record lever at some point (they are interchangeable) but using a (normally 3mm) key may have damaged the socket ...
- you have a very old Chorus unit in which the central securing bolt is LH threaded - in that case it will be a 4mm allen-key headed bolt.
If trying to rotate the allen bolt in your Veloce unit caused the return spring to "unhook" from the body, it was incorrectly fitted in the 1st place - the lever will still have worked but the action will have tended to be heavy.
We can correct any / all of the above problems.
Best PM me, or drop a mail via our website to organise if you'd like us to help.

Graeme you're a star (I was hoping you'd chip in).
On closer inspection, both bolts are marked "L" and are indeed left-hand threaded: the Chorus is 8v, '95-'96 and the Veloce a similar vintage 8v.
I've undone them both, but I'll leave further tinkering until tomorrow: the Chorus needs new guts, as it wasn't holding the selected gear, but hopefully I'll be able to re-assemble the Veloce correctly (using the Campag spare parts catalogues).
Being on a budget (well I'm still on 8v) and by necessity self-sufficient on the mechanical side, I'd like to have a go at this myself, but I've bookmarked VT in case I get out of my depth.
Thanks again.

Success!
Disassembly quite straightforward thanks to Graeme's pointer on threading; as was re-assembly, once I'd figured out that the end of the return spring locates into the body and not the thumb button...
A borked return spring on the Veloce (my fault) and a broken G-spring in the Chorus. Also noted, as per Graeme's post in the thread linked to above, that the spring mount rings were indented.
So as I've got them apart I'll replace the G-springs, spring mount rings, return springs and the little rubber stops on the back of the brake levers which are AWOL: I'll e-mail you Graeme.
Can anyone tell me what needs lubing and with what?

I was a bit previous, when I wrote "success".
Successfully disassembled yes, but the spares are proving a bugger to get hold of.
The G-springs are the same as current stock, but the return springs and spring mount rings are different now.
Although I'm in contact with Velotech, they are very busy and I haven't got anywhere since November.
Sidcup Cycles can't help.
Clements think their supplier *might *still have return springs: next order in two/three weeks.
I've sent an e-mail to Scherrit. EDIT: no dice.
Mercian asked me to call back Thurs/Fri to speak to Geoff, although a quick check of his inventory didn't look promising. EDIT: no.
A call to Downland Cycles is to be followed up with an e-mail as there isn't a phone in the workshop, but there was a sharp intake of breath and some sympathetic noises at the mention of 8 speed. EDIT nada.
Any bright ideas?
It did occur to me that the parts might be scavenged from some broken/low end Ergo, but a) they aren't common; b) they are likely to be in need of servicing; and c) that's not economic, especially as I'm intend to sell the serviced items.

Just re-read this; now I know you're doing them up to punt out I don't feel so inclined to be helpful - capitalist pig dog!
Perhaps I should report on the mods thread, hmmm..?

I need two pairs of G-springs (EC-RE109), but EC-RE209 are the same, so no problem there.
I also need two return springs (EC-RE015) which are now EC-RE215 and apparently different and two spring mount rings (EC-RE011), now EC-RE111.
Graham at Velotech seems to think the current spring mount rings can be modified, but he's snowed under (training on the 2014 kit I think) and things aren't progressing.
EAI: I completely forgot about them. They came up on a search of the part numbers; I created an account, but when I looked at the pages there was no "buy it" or "add to basket" button...
I'll give Condor and Campoldy a whirl thanks.

Ha! Yes RG I am selling them: I'm selling all my 8 speed gear to upgrade.
After a long hard think about what I'll be doing this year, I've decided to cash in my 8v chips and go 10 for the audaxer and fixed for TT.
Although the Chorus actually needed repairing, I decided to do the Veloce at the same time as I figured it would need doing sooner, rather than later and being a decent sort, didn't want to flog it off only to have it give up the ghost on the buyer.
Of course that was before I knew what a PITA it would be...

Hooray for Condor!
I've bought their very last 8v spring mount ring and return spring!
EAI want me to order through a bike shop in the US, so I can't imagine that being economical.
While the Chorus will get the works, the Veloce will just get new G-springs. The other parts are still fine and I was only replacing them "for the sake of good order", while I was doing the Chorus.
For future reference, Campoldy don't stock spares so you'll either have to pony up to get them shipped from the US from EAI or try Velotech.

back from the dead.
I got some 8 spd ergos from on here for the lady's tourer and am both angst-ridden and dismayed to find that the right shifter will shift up ok (to smaller cog on cassette), but on shifting down (to bigger cog) from the middle of the cassette the lever clicks fine as if it's completed the shift but seems to slip back to it's original position.
What smelly, shitting little part is most likely to be causing me such grief? i've already had to deal with being sold shonky wheels which took almost a month to sort out and I just put the bar tape on for god's sake! Won't someone have mercy...
Yours disenchantedly,
Gruber

Spring mount ring.
And despite what you might find on other threads, 8v spring mount rings are not obtainable as a spare part.
And despite what you might read in other threads, I have yet to see a 9v spring mount ring modified to suit 8v.
And for that reason Campag 8v is dead to me.
The G/P-springs wear a dent in the ring which is why they can't hold the gear.
PM me your address and I'll send you a "worn, not fucked" ring & springs, but it's only a stay of execution...

PS Contrary to my earlier post : "fuck Condor".
They sent me obviously fucked parts as "shop worn".

Innit.
8v kit is getting on for twenty years old now (Record/Chorus '96, Athena/Veloce '97, Mirage '98 and er... Stratos '99) and without stripping the Ergo you won't know what sort of condition the ring is in: you might get lucky and find a lightly used pair...

I'm sure there must be threads about this, but my search skills have failed.
My RH 8v Chorus Ergo is not shifting down and if I just tug on the cable to shift, it won't stay in gear: the spring in the derailleur is shifting it back up.
Presumably the ratchets and/or springs need replacing.
Can anyone point me to the threads I've failed to find, confirm my diagnosis or recommend spares suppliers?
Thanks in advance.
