Long and short of it is: no it won't work. If I had the 24mm friendly ones it would have been OK, but I don't, so it won't work. Rotor only bb.
Good news is I took the fuckers off, greased em up and now everything is nice and smooth again.

So I just purchased on bikeradar some Rotor 3D cranks the 130bcd version.
The chap I got them from said that they would work with a standard shimano threaded type external BB.
yet reading about this isnt the case?
So Im confused. I cant afford to splash out on a rotor bb
Will this work? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-tiagra-4600-bottom-bracket-cup-set/

The 3D is a 24mm axle machined version of the crank. dan original post is the 3DF which is a 30mm axle forged and machined version ..
Assuming you actually have a 3D then it should work with a Shimano BB like the seller said

^This agrees with the Bikeradar chap.

Ok so bought Rotor 3d+ cranks from Merlin to go on a BSA frame, if I am not wrong I need this BB to make it work right? http://www.rotorbike.com/products/road/bsa-frame_38
Bought from here: http://www.velotechservices.co.uk/shop/vclose2.asp?prd=76574&cat=7416002009
It says this in the description: Will work BB30 or standard threaded with the correct bottom bracket
Or just a standard shimano external BB?

That's the BB you need. Rotor 3D+ has a 30mm spindle and requires an outboard bearing bottom bracket to work on BSA frames.
Not sure it's the UBB as described on the rotor website though.
On a side note, the copy on VT website is rather misleading when it states
so you can use BB30 cranks in your standard Treaded (sic) Frame.
BB30 road cranks cannot be made to work on BSA frames. -

As Howard says, Rotor 3D+ are their own design rather than BB30 or PF30- they have a much longer spindle than the BB30.PF30 standards, which means that when run on a BB30 frame they use an 11mm spacer on each side of the 68mm shell, said spacer can be removed and external bearing cups used on a BSA frame.
The external bearing cups need to account for the 30mm spindle, which is why Shimano's BB's (designed for a 24mm spindle) won't work.
Unless you have a very, very large hammer.

^ yeah I can see the conical spacer on the picture (on the non drive side crank arm), these will go on the Chinvélo (Hong fu FM066)
Is there an alternative source/shop to buy the BB?
Anyone knows what year cranks are these? 2010/11?

How about a ceramic version from Sigma - a snip at £140.
IIRC the Zipp Vuma Quad outboard BB works too, so if you can find a Zipp supplier...
Edit - actually sigma have the standard BSA/30 BB for the same price as VT.

Why does it say BB30 spanner included? Isnt that just a standard external BB spanner!? Also just to confirm the cranks will work on a BSA frame right? ;)

Pretty much, yeah - it's just a spanner for the cups. Maybe the cups are machined slightly differently to the kind-of-shimano-standard and need a special spanner.
Thinking about it, given the cups have to accomodate a larger bearing than the 24mm axle cranks it makes sense that the diameter of the cups will be greater and thus require a different spanner.
If the cranks are Rotor 3D+ then you should be fine with the BSA/30 BB.
It says quite clearly on merlin that they'll work with BSA frames and the proper BB, so screen shot it for posterity / come-back.

In theory, you could take a BB30 frame, insert a BB30 to BSA adapter then fit the BSA30 BB then fit Rotor 3D+/F cranks. I bet someone, somewhere has actually done this.
I have done this with my BMC BB30 frame and 3DF cranks. It works a treat. No issues with bearing wear since i put them in in March, and that includes 1000km or so of riding on the stupidly dusty roads of Botswana, Swaziland, and South Africa.

Fit ALL the adapters etc.

Ok so bought Rotor 3d+ cranks from Merlin
*Seems like a fair price on those 3D+ from Merlin - are they the ones with the Cervelo branding?

I think they are the ones in the picture, cant figure out what year make are they.

Why did you do this?

When will rotor hire a graphic designer who will get rid of the garish graphics!? I am tempted to rattle can these
-

-
• #46
yeah or sharpie it
-
• #47
They are instantly recognisable as Rotor cranks, so whoever designed the graphics has done their job well.

Did that person also work as publicist for Miley Cyrus?

Buy all the Rotor cranks etc.
