Rotor cranks

  • Wut? As above I thought all 3Df cranks had a 30mm axle. Photos?

  • I think diff axle width and NDS interface ..

  • A quick one - is there a difference between the 3DF BB30 and non-BB30 cranks? I've just tried to fit a pair of these to my bike and they won't fit. The lock ring on the drive side crank is different from the ones I had fitted and won't allow the bolt that attaches it to the axle to engage.

I think I may have been sent the BB30 ones instead - does that sound logical?>

The axle is shorter on the new cranks?

  • It's resolved. New cranks are going back as I've just sneaked into the 30 day return window.

Cross bike will get 3d cranks installed once I've got a BB but, unfortunately, I won't be able to use my power meter when I race (I mainly wanted it to gather data to guide training).

I might try the powercal if I can find it.

  • The cranks have gone back on, I'll be damned if I'm going to take them off again for photos. I think they have a 30 mm axle, but use the Rotor BSA BB cups to fit. They also have a different spider which allows the drive side to fit closer to the BB cup.

I bought them ages ago from Planet X for cheaps.

  • It's a little published fact that there are two versions of the 3DF in production. There is an OEM one and an aftermarket one. Neither is compatible with the other, spider interface etc.

I only found this out a couple of weeks ago when a friend tried fitting a P2M type as to a 3DF he bought on eBay. Turns out the cranks were the OEM ones, where as the PM is designed for the aftermarket ones.

Both are 30mm for reference. I believe each uses a different tool for the lockring.

  • Should also add that the OEM ones are coloured the same as normal ones, so not necessarily cervelo coloured.

  • Yes, that would concur with my experience. Both 3DF cranks I've had are identical in terms of decals, but differ with the spider and the lock ring. I didn't get to fit the power2max to the new cranks, so don't know if it would've fitted or not.

  • Good to know. Seems very odd - why spend the money on the additional tooling to create two different cranks?

  • Yes, that's bonkers.

Andy - when's the race? I could potentially lend you a powermeter.

  • Sunday, next Sunday, then December 21st, 28th, January 4th etc.

It's a kind offer, but I'd not want to use someone else's power meter in a cross race for fear of terminal damage.

I do need to come and get my headset press soon though.

  • I was just thinking about those ENVE/Powertap G3 disc wheels that are sat in Bristol at the moment - if you could (some how) get them then you'd be welcome to use them.

    Not tubs, however.

  • Helpful forum folk.
I'm going to be on the receiving end of a pair of compact Rotor Cranks for Christmas.
They'll be going on an oldish frame with just standard BSA threading. None of this modern BB30 stuff. Am I right in thinking that these will be the ones I need?
The 3D24 (with the 24mm axle). Anything else I need to consider? Which BB should I use?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Yes 3D 24 will work. So would 3D+. You need BSA30 bottom bracket for 3D+ http://www.velotechservices.co.uk/shop/vclose2.asp?prd=76574&cat=7416002009

3D 24 will work with any Shimano BB thats made for 24mm axles.

    Why rotor?

  • Thanks Amey,
TBH, I've always lusted after them and am keen to see what the Q-rings do for my climbing.

  • Bikeradar forum has one atm at 110bcd ..

  • Cranks ordered. What's everyone using for double chainring bolts?
Anything anyone would reccomend over Rotor's offering?

  • I've used these for over a year on two bikes without issue. Seem ok to me.

  • anyone know what size/thread the pinch bolt is on the 3d+ preload adjuster?

Its the little bolt attached to this thing: http://www.velotechservices.co.uk/shop/vclose2.asp?prd=113829&cat=7386000657

  • M2.5. It's the same as the bolts used in Zipp hub cinch nuts. I have an extensive collection of them, somewhere, if you need one.

  • That would be amazing - and vastly preferably to shelling out £30 for a replacement preload adjuster.

  • If you PM me your address I'll pop one in the post for you.

  • who is running a 3D24 track crank (2014 version) paired with the rotor track bb ?

i am looking for a precise measured chain line data (real life)

i know that the chain line is claimed at 43,5mm in the catalog.
i own a 2012 version of the crank (the one with the stipes on the spider) and this crank has a chain line of 41mm.

    thanks for any help
