  • I don't really know what it is and I work on websites that 'do' social meedja (pukes on cock).

were you doing all those rapey comments on twitter?

  • were you doing all those rapey comments on twitter?

    We're not quite 'that' social.

  • I like that ^^^

    Microcosm lets people
    talk about their interest
on a site dedicated to their interest
and we take care of the tech.

Come across (to me) as clumsey and messy. The use of 'interest' twice is the real spoiler for me.
Could you use 'like minded people'???

  • I really like it.
pictures are so much better than just words.
not wild about the colour scheme, can't put my finger on why but it seems very dry somehow.

  • The idea of somehow incorporating the blocks into a keyboard crossed my mind.

  • ^^ I think the colour scheme is very neutral - as a big part of the appeal is the ability to skin it as much as you want. Want geocities circa '99, you can do it (I think?), want mumsnet? We got you covered etc etc.

  • Microcosm lets people
    create dedicated online places
    to share their interests.
And we take care of the tech.

    ?

  • microcosm - stuff

  • or else

    Microcosm - for cat pictures

  • "Microcosm - Building online* communities"

    This!

*Communities in the so-called developed world are per definition online. Increasingly so forums and/or social media are the primary "meeting place" for for social events and real world community engagement. For better and for worse online communities are it, no need to confuse the two.

  • As far as I can work tumblr is for pokemon gifs?

  • 'building a better coffee shop for mumsnet'

  • 'Microcosm... taking care of the furniture at the Genuis Bar'

  • Microcosm - making your forum look less shit.

  • Microcosm - a pyramid scheme for you.

  • A bit more prosaicly, when on the 5th does it go live? I've got to get on a flight to a wedding, in italy, at 6am. Is it live at 00.01 or some other time in the day? Can maybe get someone to log in and set it but not sure who i'd collar for that.

    On the strapline thing,
    We help you
    engage in communites
    that love your interests

sounds a bit clunky, mostly due to the 'that' I think. With the graphic could it not just be:

    We help you
    engage
    with your interests

On it's own it's a bit nebulous and could be the strap line of an evangelical church, but with the graphic it makes sense. It also works as a sentance and kind of sums up the idea. Not sure you can pitch to everyone with the same line though.

'Wringing the dollars from the long-tail'
    might be better for investors.

    B.

  • I still think the 'Building (online) communities' line is really strong...

Re:' Like Tumbler, but for forums'... Not sure you should be using another platform's brand name in your slogo, knoworrimean? Sorry if this has already been mentioned...

  • Just sticking my head up to say I will probably invest a little if I can catch the investment window in time.

    I believe it's 9am or 9:30am.

This time around, I cannot control the time... it's automatic based on "9am 2 after existing investors have been able to follow on".

It's a bit like when we were trying to describe Belle & Sebastian as "Simon & Garfunkel crossed with Velvet Underground".

It's compare and contrast, and can at least put people into the right ball park of thinking.

Just sticking my head up to say I will probably invest a little if I can catch the investment window in time.

It will go fast, but you guys are being given the best info on this, if you follow this thread you won't miss it.

  • Belle & Sebastian, Simon & Garfunkel, Velvet Underground, Tumblr

  • Serious question... how big do you guys want us to go?

Been reading some stuff this morning about others who have walked this path ahead of us and the various routes they've taken from small and safe, trying to forge a middle-path, to the big and risky.

What's interesting is the belief that most of these people had that they should've aimed a lot lot bigger, and that they were averse to big risks, and hedged their bets a lot... played it safe. Very few have ever aimed stupendously big in the community space.

Matt and I had the same chat earlier... how big do we want to be?

And we now know our answer, but I'm curious if it's the same as yours.

And if you're wondering... we are thinking very big. With the belief that we have the right market, and the right product (and vision), and that we now need the capability to deliver the product, and reach the market.

So we've gone from "big, but not too big" to "holy fuck, that's so huge I don't want to even mention the imaginary numbers because the mere size of them is so intimidating it sounds like we're making a joke out of it".

  • I think the potential for Microcosm is staggering, go large!

And I want a job when you do... Director of PDF Development or something... Big office, drinks cupboard etc.

..keys to a ford granada 2.8 with vinyl roof trim..

but, if you posted up your business plan we could see if an aspiration to go large is credible. or will this be part of the seedrs pack?

remember neardesk? different product but good marketing, their second round is nearly funded. I think an example of appropriate confidence and business planning (although their potential isn't as great as microcosm)

  • I'm thinking a warehouse with a skate park and polo court attached.

And when we're really big, our own velodrome.

  • Velocio - you saw my sheet, and told me that my numbers were silly. I'm still not sure that they where.

The community space is crying out for more - local government wants it, political parties want it, schools want it, swimming groups want it, but what they don't want to do is to have to set it up. Microcosm should make the setup so easy that these things suddenly exist. Hell, I've ideas for a couple of things I'd like to do with it.

Go big. Play for broke. I see this a something that could challange Facebook. It certainly has more potential than Twitter does.
