I tried to stick to hippy's plan (just carbs and some fructose during the ride, etc). I think I was good all the way up until the end. This probably wasn't the right 'recovery meal' post ride.

post ride you want fats, though there are better fats, that looks delicious

If you want caffeine to work for you then give it up weeks in advance. No help now I know.
Depends what you mean by 'work'. As an ergogenic aid (ie. legal shit that makes you go faster) recent studies have shown you do not need to stop taking in caffeine beforehand - you still get the benefit even if you're a regular coffee drinker.
I went cold turkey before my first 24hr and maybe the second but didn't for the 3rd and probably wouldn't bother again. Not sure about effect on sleep though - if that's tempered by being regular drinker.

Sorry, yes, meant about long term effects on sleep and using caffeine to keep you awake.

My mum did a few Tupperware parties in the 80s and I can confirm that they have little pumps in the lids and are all orange, beige or brown

I can't get it right at moment. Currently using Hammer gels and powder and a lot of water (too expensive) but still feeling flakey after about 100 of 130km Saturday club ride. The problem is heat and humidity. 27-32 degs and 95-100% humidity. Singapore.
Any nitritionalists got any homemade potions that might work?

What Machine said. You could try a cake made with just a pinch of salt (as well as flour and other ingredients) washed down with water.
Juice some carrots and tomatoes.
What you eat and drink before a ride is important; don't have a deficit of food or electrolytes before you leave.
If you want caffeine to work for you then give it up weeks in advance. No help now I know.
The first week of no caffiene was horrible, pillow drenching night sweats, irritibility, etc.
But thank fuck that was done, I sleep so much better now I drink only decaf. And when I needed a boost on Paris-Brest-Paris then it really worked when I had a full on coffee.
