Narrow risers look ace on skinny steel frames!
(Front QR on wrong side though.)BTW, I double-checked Craftybutcher in my reference library (Rogers Profanisaurus).
My suspicions were confirmed -

I'm getting a halo skewer set as it annoys me every time I see it and swapping the wheel over to the freecycled Mirage hub thing as it ~~literally ~~ figuratively would spin for ever. Less braking surface though (don't tell the wife)
At what point do you stop looking for ways to make a bike more awesomerer to you?
I guess I just want it lighter for less dough. That blue feather in the picture is lighter, although I haven't asked him if I can weigh it.

Need some forks colour not a problem. -
• #59
Wow!
I hope you're OK! was that an accident of did they just give with old age?
-

Cheers Loic
I noticed yesterday the wheel was ever so slightly wobbly but if I spun it by hand it was still straight and true then this morning I heard a faint clicking and assumed it was a loose spoke.
10 minutes later I had just turned into Lillie Road (after stopping) and heard banging looked down and my fork was trying to escape.

I suppose I should update to what it looks like currently.

• #62
Arrrr man! I had this before Rik Van Looy and always regretted selling it! If you ever decide to get rid of it give me a shout.
-
• #63
Unless my pre three kids and mortgage disposable income reappears this will service me fine unless I continue to Indra it at which point I would mightily upset. I fucking love this thing.
-
• #64
Worth a try dude! Hope you get it sorted soon.

My goodness that's a scary looking fork failure.... glad you weren't injured.
Shame too as it's a great bike - hope you find a replacement fork quickly/easily and when you do, you'll know exactly what to do with it...[QUOTE=skrtluv;3430141]Bang

This could be your lucky day!
I think I have something that would suffice........same colour too. I'll have a squint later ;0)

• #67
Cheers, I need to get the stem out and headset nuts undone to measure.
-
• #68
You can have the forks from this if you need? I'll dig out the steerer length. EDIT - steerer is 216mm.
-
• #69
I finally got measurements.
140mm steerer length with at least 35mm thread. So I think they'd be too long after chopping.*
*plus they have eyelets :)
-
• #70
140mm is pretty short - short steerers are easier to find than long....
If you find ones that are too long there are a couple of things to consider...1) you've got quite a bit of stem showing above the headset lock-nut, so you could get away with a longer fork and a spacer between the lock nut and upper race. (provided there's enough thread on the steerer to be able to get the screw on bit of the upper race down into contact with the upper race cup if you see what I mean.
2) Good bike shops/frame builders etc may well have the correct tool to cut you a new thread - IIRC Vintage Bike Cave do it for cheaps (less than a tenner).
Probably best if you cut the thread before you chop down the fork so you've at least got somewhere to start from.3) If you find a fork you like but it's got eyelets and you don't want to look like a big girls blouse, you can saw them off and then file a neat and tidy shape...

Would you reccommend buying a new headset or can the race be re-used properly?
-
• #72
Reuse will be fine it's only the crown race that needs to be removed.
LBS should have the right tools but if you you're minded to do it yourself a hammer and punch is one relatively easy way to knock the crown race off the broken fork, not much that can go wrong there
Fitting crown race to a replacement fork is a bit more tricky - 1" plastic pipe or a 25mm-ish hole in a bit of wood can be used to knock the race into place (e.g. open jaws of vice or workmate to more than the steerer tube, sit the wood with hole bridging the gap, locate crown race, flip fork upsidedown with crown race against bit of wood and bash the underside of the crown with a hammer and another bit of wood)
check the gap between crown and race to ensure it's uniform all round and you're good to go! -

Well I've got the race off using a vice for these rather fetching bad boys.
HACKSAW ALL THE THINGS!
-
• #74
thats gonna look hideous with the red of the frame.
well done.
-
• #75
You're a hideous.
I may have shortened the bars somewhat.
