Awesome time this weekend. Loved playing with the Shitstorm (Prawnvp!) and thanks to the Warships for being such great hosts. Nurse Ali, I don't know where I'd be without your care!
Well done Cambridge!

Awesome Cambridge! Good times, good courts, good people!
Thanks Ali and jo for the house invasion!I'm sure there will be lots to talk about in the sense of formatting and future tourneys so maybe new thread for that at some point? I guess cambridge facilitate a bid just need someone with a sweet location and surface! Early dates for planning would be great as Cambridge saved the day this year but lets get more organised!

+1 Best UK champs to date and great to have the euro qualifiers in the same weekend. Same next year for sure.

Must be the largest courts in a UK polo tourney and the surface is just brilliant, Euros 2014 there would be awesome! Special mention to Hayden who in my mind MVP for the week, organising the tourney but at the same time still putting in a good shift on court, M A X for lending me his bike, Sons of Jor-El who made it into the RR in their first tourney, Tias (and his very friendly cats) for the couch, team mates Antonio and Seba for sticking together and last but not least the Cambridge crew for a brilliant tourney, free coffee was brilliant, the chilli on the second day was awesome, the super quick speed of taking down the court with the aid of Angelo's flat bed VW and sorry Josh for the beer on your camera! Congrats too Ryan and Nik, would buy you guys some drinks at the pub!

I have to say it was awesome seeing Westway (previous London beginners) playing so well as a team too!

BTW, all the people I spoke to about being new UK reps, can you please email me at jess@lhbpa.org? If your scene doesn't have a rep, email me!

On a side note, next year I think the format needs more discussion. I wasn't prepared to play 12 games in a row and it certainly affected some teams the next day.
I'm sure there will be lots to talk about in the sense of formatting and future tourneys so maybe new thread for that at some point?
I don't want to stink up the thread with format discussions, but while it's on my mind, allowing draws on Saturday really screwed up our (and Dead Rappers') day. I get that there's pressure on time, but I don't think draws should be considered an option...
I doubt we would have qualified through the RR anyway, but it would have been nice to have a bash.

Draws are a legitimate result if neither team is better than the other (longer games and allowing draws would be ideal for example).
This probably isn't the thread for this, but I'd have thought 3 rounds of swiss and then the removal of the best and last team after each subsequent round would have given a fairer top 9, John can probably pass on more info.
Looking at Podium: the tie break scores for the teams that secured 5th to 12th (compared to those teams outside the top 12) seems to indicate that some teams had an easier ride than others (could be wrong here).
The system was equally unfair to all teams if that makes you feel any better, but we could definitely improve it if the UK/Euro combination tourney is to continue.

Props to Spring Break (and Depth Charge).
Huge thanks to the cambridge lot involved in hosting such a great tourney. It was quite a feat to host uk champs and euro quali, but was perfectly executed.
Great people. Great weather. Great times. More of the same please.

Well, with 29 teams, you need 5 rounds to mathematically sort the list. After 3 rounds you could have teams in the wrong positions, based on the opponents they've been drawn against, rather than their ability. Though of course you could argue if you've lost 3 games, you are unlikely to win the next two. That's not to say it's not an option though.
But we also had dual priorities, we had to produce a sorted list for the elim the next day, so I'm not sure I'd be comfortable removing teams. Also it wouldn't have really gained us that much, you'd have to more aggressively remove teams than the rate you'd suggested.
Given the hours and courts we had, I think this was the best compromise. Anything that isn't pure round robin is always going to less accurate, but we don't have unlimited courts and time. I calculated 8 as the biggest number we could have in the round robin, if we could have had 10 or 12 that would have been even better.
I think that the facility would allow for 3 big courts (if you rotate them 90 degrees), and that would have allowed for another round of swiss, and more in the round robin. But you'd also loose some of the atmosphere, as all the spectators would be outside. But it's also something to consider, if Cambridge, or a similar location do it next time.
We are also (as far as I am aware), one of the few countries, or regions who do anything other than a standard swiss + double elim tournament for qualifying. We can of course consider that as an option, and we could do a few extra rounds of swiss.
France and Germany have separate qualifiers, and do round robin. In Germany they only let teams with a realistic chance play, and in France, they have two qualifying tournaments, with the top teams being prequalified. Again those are options, and are both superior from an accuracy point of view, but have their own downsides (separate tournaments, subjective elitism etc.)

I think they should be separate. Two completely different aims needing different formats. It just doesn't make sense. Hopefully the qualifiers can be at Herne Hill next year!

Regarding draws, it's pretty much established now as part of Swiss. I don't really like them, purely for the way they can disadvantage a team in Swiss, but I don't like a golden goal either, it doesn't reward the losing team, who did manage to not get beaten in the regulation time. Neither is a good scenario.
Another scenario could be 5 minute overtime periods. That way a team had a chance to come back, instead of losing to a lucky golden goal. But that is less predictable from a time point of view, for organisers. You could, in theory, have an hour long game.
As Jono says, the ideal scenario is longer games, but again, that requires more court time.

is there a way to rewards draws more. So two draws is equal to a win and a loss?
ps. thanks cambridge for an awesome tourney!
-
• #269
Draws are crappy on purpose to get people to play for the win...
But if they are allowed in Swiss rounds there really needs to be an extra round to make up for it.

good job Cambridge ,,great tournament .. ..cider was good awesome weekend awesome polo thanks to all

Agreed. But... there's no time!

In Podium and Challonge? no
Podium does the classic 3 points, 1 point.
Challonge just counts wins (so 1 win is better than 5 draws)
It would require doing it by hand, or another piece of software.
But as Louis says, 3/1 points was designed to promote attacking play (in football). The same probably applies to polo. If you don't want a draw, risk more.
-
• #274
i don't think teams playing for draws will be as much of a problem as the win/draw/loss score weighting currently is. But what'evs, if it's a nightmare/not possible then no point discussing
