Holy crap Ian - I'm so sorry we missed you! :(
I'm afraid I've been away for the last few days and didn't even realise you'd posted on the previous page about potentially coming. To make matters worse I was actually at the station 20mins early, checked the thread at 19:35 (Howrad's was the last one at that point), then pootled around the first bit of the route in case rhowe or AirTime were loitering around (there was confusion over the start point last time too). We waited for Katy to get in on the train and then headed out at about 19:55 - whereabouts were you at that point?
That's a damn shame because it was an absolutely beautiful evening and a lovely ride...

oh well, maybe next time. think I should have posted that I was on my way before I left home. think I got to the station at 7:48 but I'd followed the signs to the station and was actually at the other end. I realised and went to the front a few minutes later. must have missed ypu by a few seconds!

Oh no! Second time we've missed someone at the station - the curse of WGC.
Thanks all for a lovely evening

Your idea of a lovely ride completely destroyed me. But yes, it was quite lovely. Totally destroyed my previous Strava times.
-
• #1733
Yeah, but you rode out. I'm keeping it TNRC real - train out, train back home again.

Strava reckons I burnt 3000 calories on the bike today. By my calculations I recovered those on the train. Had to keep stopping on the way home from new Southgate due to leg cramps. Unfortunately I was less than 10 miles short of a century :-(
Rod Munch, you're a machine. Leading the whole way pretty much. KT and AirTime, you showed me up for the commutenger I am. Chapeau to you all.
Oh and tom you must have just missed is indeed. Grab phone numbers next time (or now, so you don't need to remember) -

Rod munch is an animal. Don't know how you had the mental resolve to look the train station in the eye and say 'no not today, you won't get my £9.60 for a single, i'm going to ride home, in the dark, on my own'. my bed was calling me and seeing as though i'd clocked 75 miles already the prospect of another 20+ wasn't that appealing. I think the risk/reward is too skewed to the downside there. Plus i'm just weak.
Great ride guys, thoroughly enjoyed it. And the 'social' pace was pretty swift if i do say so myself! Thanks Rod Munch for your epicness and sorry Ian for missing you!
Haha rhowe you made me laugh with your big bag of shopping! you literally bought half the contents of the bakery and sweets section. Hope you enjoyed all that on the way home!
Let the post ride sofa recovery session begin tonight! aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

Obligatory Strava link
Looks like Strava helpfully included the (straight line) distance between Welwyn and New Southgate despite it being paused for the train ride, so it was more like 85 for the day I guess.Supplies for the train ride were
- 5x oat & raisin cookies (only managed 3 or 4 at ~300kcal each)
- 3x chocolate caramel shortbread
- Large bag of crisps
- Lucozade
- Bottle of Fursty Ferret
- 5x oat & raisin cookies (only managed 3 or 4 at ~300kcal each)

Traffic was awful on the way down and I punctured once there. Was on tubeless with Stan's sealant so after a bit of stress managed to get the sealant to plug the hole that - curiously - was in the sidewall.
So no, not great, but needed to test the bike as I'm supposed to be racing it on Sunday. Other than the tyre stress it's al'right.
