Well I thoroughly enjoyed that, felt like TNRC ought to be. Nice tight bunch, riding well in some fairly tricky conditions, no showboating off the front and no straggling off the back. I'll even forgive the couple of riders who turned up with gears (who I will not name and shame, even if KT Bee and Howard have pretty much outed themselves). Pace was not blistering but we didn't hang about either. I didn't have a speedo or any navigational device so was just trying to judge what felt like a reasonable rolling speed and it seemed to flow quite well I thought.
As I said the conditions were a bit tricky, seemed to be particularly dark and the persistent drizzle didn't help. It can be hard to spot the difference between the dry patches under the trees and gravel beds. If you do hit unexpected gravel the best thing to do is as little as possible, focus on the bit of clear road beyond the gravel, no braking or steering until you are through it. Perhaps I was over timid on the descents but better that than losing people on those dark slippery corners.
Even if were weren't honking along we were done by quarter to ten which gave us plenty of time to enjoy the delights of a wet Tuesday evening in Potters Bar, nice couple of pints outside the 'Spoons.

Nothing bad ever happens in a 'spoons.
Come to think of it the last bar fight I saw was in a 'spoons. I say fight, couple of blokes pushed an old bloke off his barstool, kicked him in the head a couple of times and ran off. My pal, a newly qualified doctor, leapt up to do the "it's ok, I'm a doctor" routine and told his buddies not to move him. His buddies told my friend to "fuck off", picked the bloke up, sat him back on his stool and put a fresh pint in front of him.
Oh, and the 'spoons round the corner from me smells like something bad happened in it. Don't think anything bad has tho, that's just how a pub is bound to smell if it's the cheapest pub in Wood Green.

I'm currently in York with only an iPhone (and the missus) for company so cannot format a post. Suggest that Rod/Airtime/anyone puts up a ride. You all know the format and the first to put up the ride post gets to choose the ride.

Riding out
Thoughts on the route heading out? Rod Munch?
A1000 to Barnet then A1081 to South Mims....gets a bit twisty after that. What we looking at 25miles from Central London?
Not sure i'm going to be able to make the start time if i ride out so may be bed wetting and getting the train...
V glad I didn't lose my nerve (and also v glad I brought gears - rolling? Pah!)
As well as a lovely little roll round the countryside and a couple of very nice pints I have also learned that saying 'Jamie Lee Curtis in Trading Places' is an incredibly powerful weapon of distraction (at least on men over 30). I do not know why - and am not going to try and find out on a work computer - but I think this might prove to be useful knowledge - especially if I want to branch out into bike jacking at any point.
