  • are laser pointers slightly cruel in some way? my mother gave me one for jimmy, I used it once and he spent the next hour staring at the bit of wall where it last was, I thought i'd broken him!

  • infra-red technology - the ultimate for your pet

  • Ha!

    In other news... This

    Any good?

    Ta

ok until the receiver thing falls off or he loses his collar (ours is on his third)
Expensive, but if you do keep her and get her chipped, definitely the best option.

On the cost front, I would say the Wolf costs us about £120 a year. £100 is on his yearly jabs, £5 for a 5kg bag of kitty biscuits from Tesco every quarter, and any leftovers we care to give him and a bit of raw meat and fish every now and again. The good thing about him being a stray is that he's really not fussy when it comes to food.
I did invest in a microchip cat flat and a 90 day feeder early on, which means we can go on holiday for 10 days, stick a webcam on his feeder and keep an eye on him - he's happy as larry. We could never put him in a cattery - he'd hate the loss of independance.
    Cheapest pet I've ever had.

  • Great idea on the webcam and feeder, gotta try that.
Strays are such easy maintenance. When we lived in a house, the cost of feeding them was near enough £0. They hunted daily and were stupidly healthy. Vet visits were a breeze too. They always commented on how fit they were.
Alas, now they're indoors and too used to cat food. Some even shun meat when offered!

  • Top advice guys cheers.

Have set our little waif up with a sort of kennel / shelter in the yard into which we are going to put a timed feeder. We go away on Christmas Eve. If she's still hanging out when we get back on the 28th then we're adopting her. Lets see what happens.

  • Yah!

  • I can heartily recommend this, had it for about 18 months now and havent needed to change the batteries, its his everyday feeder as well. At first he was a little nervous of the noise it made but now he hears it whirring in the morning from upstairs and runs down from his bed and waits for breakfast. I have a cheap wireless ip cam on it, which has motion detection, so we can always check that he's eaten and is coming and going, when we're away. He is a good little hunter as well, and eats everything he catches.

  • Cheers clefty. Already bought one of those 5 day rotators as I wanted to set up some dry / wet mix. That looks good though.

  • I dont feed him the bought wet food, I dont think it's particulary good for them, if she's a stray she'll be less fussy as well. I buy a 2 quid pack of lamb or beef hearts from tesco and give him half of one a week as well he loves them, and they're much better for him and his teeth.

  • This is all good advice. Ill be sure to lean her more towards the dry stuff. Looks way cheaper. Why do you feel the wet is bad? I guess I'll use up the packets I have.

  • Isn't this a never ending debate about dry vs wet? With dry food I was advised to ensure the kitty is drinking enough water. I give her highness a mixture of dry and wet. I give her a pouch of wet in the morning and a pouch for the evening, and I have a bowl of dry food always available for her. This is purely because she is only young and want to eat whenever she want to. She did eat everything initially and gained a bit of weight, but the vet said it was due to the fact that she was a stray and will want to eat as much as she can whenever food is available, she has calmed down completely now.

I have to admit though I have wasted quite a few pounds on wet food because some days she just doesn't fancy the wet stuff, but I give it anyway, I was also advised wet food should be dispose of after a couples of hours of opening and that's what I do, which is more important I have a bowl of dry available as she tends to eat small amount throughout the day.

  • She went from 2.9kg to now 3.6kg and it's steady. I think 2.9kg for an adult kitty is too underweight. Bottom line is, as some have mentioned here, as long as. The kitties are happy and healthy, then they can whatever and whenever they want to.

  • Mine go mad if they don't get wet stuff at around 1800, it disappears in about 30 seconds.

  • I have the sureflap microchip cat flap, it's worth the money. The customer service is also very good. Staywell customer service apparently isn't as good. If you do decided to get a microchip flap, I would suggest getting the sureflap pet door not the cat flap

Think miss mouse has something similar? Only difference is with the pet door, you can set the timer for it to be open and lock as set times, with the cat flap, I have to do it manually using the dial, which isn't too much trouble, but it can be difficult some days after a night shifts and have to get up at 5:30 to unlock the flap. I think sizes are similar and the pet door is only marginally more expensive.

Even on days when her highness fancies dry food, she would still demand a bowl of wet available or she wouldn't start eating the dry.

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago to save spending about 3 times as much on the cat sitters to come and feed our two over New Years when we are in NI. Got some really cheapo batteries (takes 4 x D cells) just to try it out and they're still going. Will stick some new duracells in there for when we actually go away. The only downside is that the dispenser is just a simple cylinder with a slot that rotates to pick up food and then dump it into the tray. If the level of food inside drops too low, it doesn't pick up as much on each cycle so the portion sizes are smaller. Not a problem if you keep it filled up though.

Currently set for 3 times a day but will probably do 4 while we are away so if the neighbour cat nicks one meal, there will be enough throughout the rest of the day.

You can also control the portion size (number of rotations of the cylinder) for each feeding.

  • Right, just put her highness on the scale, and she is now officially borderline overweight... Weight lost programme begins now!

Share the ideas. Two of ours are incapable of jumping on kitchen counters with grace anymore. It's more like..."oh look, high spot, I can see prey easily, go go gadget slinky body...yawp..uh oh...I've made a huge mistake...I WILL NOT GIVE IN...oh wait no, yes I'm giving in, I'll bring down everything on the kitchen counter to prove I was right, I'm a cat after all....aaaaand mission accomplished. HEY HUMAN, your stuff is all over the floor, you are stupid and I'm awesome...now feed me".

Yeh I should have mentioned the thing about the dispenser -it is a bit annoying, I try and keep mine topped up, and open up the top every now and again to make sure its level in the hopper.
I only feed the wolf automatically 1 portion, once a day. This means that he might get some meaty or fishy leftovers in the evening, or I just push a couple of buttons at the back to do a manual feed. If we're away he only gets fed once a day (I make sure there is plenty of water around)
He's quite capable of catching some extra food if he really wants to.

I would say he's fully grown now and was around 4.3kg at his last weigh - which the vet said was normal - he's definitely not a fat kitty. He's coming up to his 2nd year anniversary with us now, I still don't know where he came from, but he's happy with us now.

On the great wet vs dry debate. It's mainly because I don't know whats in the wet food - I feel like it's the cat equivalent of a ready meal - admittedly the same could be said for biscuits - but with the meaty stuff I'd rather give him something that I can actually identify as meat or fish. That said, I'm lucky the wolf will literally eat anything (we play a game in our house - will the wolf eat it) - my last cat was a fussy bitch and wouldn't eat anything apart from go-cat and whiskas pouches

Here he is on the scratching post I made for him.

  • What's the blue thing around his neck?

  • Wait, don't tell...

  • ...is it a laser ?

  • gps?

  • you got it O'Shane, the wolf is up to date with modern technology.

(we're still working on the laser)
