  • Thanks for the tip - Campyoldy haven't got any, but I found some straight pull Sapim CX (not CX Ray) bladed spokes at George Hall Cycles. I'm wondering if rebuilding the whole wheel is a better idea than one replacement spoke?

  • I replaced a bladed spoke on a Vento with a normal double butted one and nothing went wrong, but it looked a bit odd.

  • Aren't there straight pull DT Swiss Aero Lite spokes? The are bladed like the original spokes.

  • I thought I'd found a source of Sapim CX (not the newer CX-Ray) spokes but the guy actually only has CX-Rays. The CX is 1.3 x 2.8mm whereas the more common CX-Ray is 0.9 2.2mm. Should I replace just the one spoke or rebuild it all with CX-Rays? I'm worried the thinner spoke will make for a less stiff wheel?
@TomvanHalen - thanks maybe I should just go for one CX-Ray and maybe it won't look too weird?

  • The thinner CX Ray spokes build a stronger wheels if I'm not mistaken because the spokes are more elastic. This either gives them inherent breakage resistance or means you can tension them tighter or something. I'm sure someone can clarify.

If I remember my wheel rightly, the spokes were more similar to CX rays than normal bladed spokes, because the blade was the same width as the butted portion, rather than wider as on a spoke that's just been flattened.

  • Replaced 2 of the spokes with straight pull CX Rays. Any difference is almost invisible unless you look really close up. Not easy to track down those spokes. It's also nice and true now :-) hopefully got a load more life in it.

  • I love riding this thing! Think I need a longer seatpost - the current one is on the limit marks and I now think I could do with an extra cm or maybe 2...

  • So pretty!

Were you down Tooley Street a couple of months back? Saw some guy walking it past the London Dungeons.

    Looked well sick you know...

  • No not me - I live in Portsmouth. Glad you like it :-)

  • I've had some more sturdy wheels for everyday use made - H+Son TB14s on old campag 9-speed hubs, with 25mm tyres. I was surprised just how much smoother it is over rough country lanes. It was not easy tracking down a 26mm thread lockring for the rear hub, but got a new Marchisio for €9 from Clemenzo in Berlin. The handlebars seem to point up in this photo but I'm sure it doesn't look like that in real life! I think I might try either Deda 215 or Cinelli Giro d'Italia handlebars, and I'd like a longer seatpost still. This ones at the limit but I feel I now need a cm more height...

  • This is beautiful...

I remember when I was searching for the lockring myself - it took a while to find out the necessary diameter!

    Good luck! Very nice bike

  • is the rear hub a record one or just random 9sp campag?

  • I think the front is veloce, it was unused. £12. Rear I got off here, it was Chorus. Look like classic Record style hubs

  • Got a new longer seatpost - Chorus Titanium. I think it matches the Grammo stem nicely. I'd like to get an EPS 39t inner chainring - the mismatching finishes are bugging me when I see it in photos.

  • This is a true beauty now - very well done! Enjoy :-)
