  • plain black microtex (the suede stuff) to match a black saddle. if in doubt on this build I'd go for the plain option. the frame stands out enough already

  • Not normally a fan of colour-coding bikes and finishing kit.

My mind is unchanged on the subject of tyres, however with Ergos and the rear brake routed through the TT there won't be much cable on show, so if the outers match the logo I can see that working.

This is provided the colour coding stops there: black saddle, black tape and black tyres.

Nice to see a build using a mix of components for different periods for a change.

  • Thanks for the comments.

Got me some Veloflex, oh yeah.

and the cables, genuine Campagnolo as recommended by Cheesecake_intl who has really kindly rebuilt the RH ergo with new G springs.

  • Slow progress update:

Fitted the crankset (not torqued yet though, need some allen keys for my torque wrench), derailleurs and handlebars.

I went for Soma Highway One handlebars as they come in silver and I really like the look of the curve on them.

I'm waiting for some inner tubes with a long enough core to get through the rim. And bar tape.

Anyone know off hand what to torque a 10 speed Record square taper crank to?

  • Watch dem bloody swingy bars mate

  • ^ Eh?! I don't understand.

  • Please understand before it's too late!

  • OK, got it, thanks :-)

  • Be sure to watch out with the front brake too ;)

    A torque compendium here -

  • The compact bars look good.

Keen to see this when it's finished.

  • Just seen a Somec panto Campag Record (fluted) crankset on the bay. Just in case you were tempted by such things.

  • Update - cables fitted, gears dialled in for starters, gonna leave it untaped for a couple of rides until I am happy with the lever position.

  • Whoa, that's a real beauty. Loving the mix of an old frame and new components.

  • Hmmm, the coke can shim is not working as well as I'd hoped - tightened up to 15nm and it just won't hold at all. Is my shim not adding enough (it's wrapped twice around the handlebar) or is it just never going to work?

  • I'd suggest coughing up the money and getting a nitto shim. I used to use the coke can method but I always found it never gripped the bars particularly well.

  • It's finished. It feels great out on the road, really solid, every stroke goes straight to the road. Love it. I got a 26.0mm stem for a really good price in the end (Cinelli Grammo). I've only gone for a couple of short rides so far, couple of tweaks needed - feels like the bars point angle down when on the hoods.

  • Looks great!

  • Big ring funny colour?

  • The inner ring is plain aluminium but the outer one has some kind of anodised finish, can't remember what Camag call it... It's very noticeable in the photos, less so in person

  • Looks sweet, was skeptical about the tan walls on those rims but seems to pull it off, also like the rim/stem shiney'ness matching.

  • Like it a lot but it looked better with the older-shape stem!

  • Like it a lot but it looked better with the older-shape stem!

    Lies.

    It's prefect.

  • So gutted - one of the rear spokes broke after 3 miles on only my 2nd proper ride :-(
I got it off eBay and they only offer protection for 45 days and I've taken longer than that to finish getting all the bits and to build it. Anyone had any luck re-spoking a Vento / Shamal? If possible I'd love to reuse the original hubs but finding those spokes is a nightmare...

  • Could you find a worn out one and pinch the spoke out of it?

Pricey for a spoke I suppose, at least you would have a few spare though.

    Otherwise, campyoldy?
