  • I like this bit:

The Westway, the ultimate symbol of how the urban motorway
tore up our cities, will become the ultimate symbol of how we are claiming central London for the bike.

If he can do that I may even vote tory next election

    (not really)

  • Woah

In consultation with business, we will study the experience from cities such as Paris and Dublin, where lorries over a certain size are restricted from certain parts of the city or at certain times of the day.

  • As well as the admirable Lycra-wearers, and the enviable east Londoners on their fixed-gear bikes

    Anyone on here?

  • **Mayor's new Vision for Cycling is "Ground-breaking" says London Cycling Campaign **

    Cycling Commissioner Andrew Gilligan said:
"Today's document shows how seriously the Mayor has taken his Go Dutch promise to the LCC and the cyclists of London. Both the Mayor and I pay tribute to the LCC, journalists, bloggers and other campaigners for driving the issue so far up the political agenda."

  • Ahh forgot this

    and, his wits about him.

I seem to be crossing genres..

  • and, his wits about him.

Don't you just need them for E&C roundabout?

  • Don't you just need them for E&C roundabout?

Indeed, the rest of London can be crossed on your bike in a befuddled, port-induced haze.

  • I seem to be crossing genres..

We all cross genres on this forum. I post in Miscellaneous and Meaningless as well as in the cycle training sub-forum

  • These plans are audacious. Interesting stuff. a billion quid over ten years.

  • That's Amy Fleuriot of Cyclodelic. BoJo is on her bike ...and she is on his. .

  • Read the document. Lots of stuff that's imperfect but this level of planning and investment is undoubtedly a positive thing - IF they do what the document says they will do.

  • Is this the east london route

    whoops bold.

  • Is this the east london route

    https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/cycling/cs2extension .
not quite. The 'new' route is combination and upgrade of superhighway 3 Barking to Tower Hill, linked to new route along embankment, then through the parks to Lancaster Gate, Paddington and onto the Westway - they will take out a traffic lane as car use has dropped 22%.
The embankment might look like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJSvdpoVHBk

  • That'd be great!

  • The rhetoric seems to have changed slightly, less equivocation around 'needs of all road users', ie motor vehicle users are most important. Taking out lanes for cycle only routes ini areas as high profile as victoria embankment is a pretty bold political step.

Admittedly it is only talk at the moment but it's talk of a very different nature to even a couple of years ago.

I think a big part of this is down to the campaigns of the LCC et al. and I think it's generally a good thing. There may be some on here who like to barrel around New Street roundabout mixing it with the motor cars but these plans are not meant to improve things for those people. These plans are for the 95% of londoners who don't fancy it much or at all at the moment.

  • The lane in that picture in the article is too narrow and will suffer from crowding. Why are there still many more lanes for cars where people on bikes won't be welcome?

The whole plan could be a ploy to get cyclists off the roads out of the way of drivers to 'smooth' traffic flow

    From Boris's foreword:

"...nothing I do will affect cyclists’ freedom to use any road they choose."

Let's hope that is absolutely hammered home at every stage of the process.

  • And also looking at that embankment picture pedestrians will have to cross 4 lanes of motor traffic and 2 lanes of cycle traffic to cross the road. Uncivillized!
