Just UTFS'd and found this old thread. Still waiting for a reply from Paul before I do something stupid.

  • This was the most informed/unbiased answer I could find to the EAI threading question, but it deals with Phils, not Paul (may be true also for Paul). That said, maybe Will's recommendation to tap out the threads on a BB cup is worth pursuing.

    Hope that helps.

  • Just rang Hubjub and David forwarded me the exact same answer from Will. Just need a vice and an old BB now!

    Did this work for you?

  • I havnen't needed the new cogs yet, so sorry can't say, but the idea makes a lot of sense. I would wait for the answer from Paul, and if they say they should work fine I would tap them out on the BB cup then try them on the hub. Looks like you have the basic steel cog (which are the same ones I have) so there is no coating on the threads as Will warns about. I suspect it will be fine, but would wait for the answer from Paul then proceed carefully. Good luck.

  • anyone know if the EAI cogs work ok with DA7600s? while we're on the subject..

  • I didn't have any problems mounting those on my DA7600's. Used some grease and was able to screw them on fully by hand. After that I used the chainwhip to tighten it up.

  • rob check out nuknow's experience with eai on goldtecs

  • Ah, I hadn't seen that. I'm still waiting to hear back from Paul. Rogan might be able to find me an old bb with steel cups that I could use. It seems as though the trick is to wear down the EAI threads a little. It will be easier and cheaper if it goes wrong to use a bb cup. I've also got a freewheel side on the Paul hub that I could use.

  • i only have the UN55 it seems,

and the nds cup is pretty flimsy, but you can give it a go if you wish?

  • If its metal, it's worth having a go. I think. Do you ever want to use it again in case I screw up the threads?

Also my chain whip I got in the amazing box of tools mrs roboto bought me for Christmas is not 1/8. If anyone who goes to east is reading this and can bring one to JB tomorrow for me I would be grateful.

  • cool, thats fine will stick it in bag

my chain whip isnt 1/8 either a real pain

  • You got any off cuts of 1/8 chain?

  • I can bring a chain whip.

You can do what TM is hinting at tho, the chain on mine is not the original one... I can bring some chain if you want.

  • Churs guyz.

I've got some odd spare links hanging around not from the same manufacturers though, although that's probably not a problem. Also I don't think I've got quite enough links.

  • Theo so you're bringin?
    Because I got one too

  • ^I just remembered I might be late so probably better someone else does actually

  • ok noted

  • just use the chain you use on the bike on the chainwhip then take it off and use it on the bike, done

  • Or carefully, very carefully.... Rotafix

  • I usually rotafix my cogs, but... I'd rather be a bit more careful with this setup. Anyway, I'm waiting for spokes and then I can actually have ago at lacing the wheels. That'll be fun.

  • Don't go getting your cog stuck on before it's laced.

You may find that once built it threads on by hand, with a bit more leverage...

  • What do you take me for...

    unscrews cog

  • Update.

Breakthrough on the cog situation. I sanded down the anodising on both sets of threads and cleaned out the debris. I then wrapped a small length of chain around the teeth so I could turn the cog backwards and forwards by hand without applying too much pressure from a chain whip.

After a few minutes of turning backwards and forwards I finally got the cog to the end of the hub threads and it now screws on and off easily. Panic over!

Spokes should arrive tomorrow. Wheel building weekend is go.

  • Built the front wheel last night. Unfortunately haven't got enough of the right length spokes for the rear. I bought what I believed to be 32x 288mm spokes with the front hub and they turned out to be 290mm. So I need some more spokes.

I'm going to ring around some LBSs in a bit to see if they have anything in stock and if they can true while I build up the rear etc.

Not bad for a first attempt. I just want them, checked, tensioned properly and trued before I start rolling on them.

  • Condor has a good spoke selection...
