Pitlock / Pitlocks

  • If the previous owner cared enough to buy pitlocks, perhaps he has posted wanted ads for it?
Try googling the frame number. Try posting pics and info on here

  • I didn't find anything too conclusive in a search, so I was wondering what the general feeling about Pitlocks is, because I'm thinking of getting a few sets made up with the same key for 3 of my bikes (cheers to Condor!).

Some of the threads back in 2009ish are very positive, but some of the more recent ones say that they can be (easily?) compromised. If they're easily compromised then I guess there's no point getting them.

So, are Pitlocks any good? And how do they compare to Pinheads that the 'locks that work' thread recommends (were Pitlocks removed from the recommendation)?

Of course there's Atomic22, but that's a bit overkill at the moment and much costlier compared to the pitlocks (£334 v £70), as I don't have a £5000 Cervelo S5 or something.

    Cheers!

  • They can be compromised very easily, save your money and get the Atomic 22s.

  • That bad, eh? What about pinheads, are they rubbish too?

  • The newer type are probably not vulnerable to the Velocio screwdriver attack (TM). Sure, not as good as Atomic 22s, but I don't think "that bad" (whatever that's worth). As with all security measures, it depends on how much you're willing to spend, where/how long you leave your bike, and how upset you'd be if whatever it was got stolen. As a deterrent to stripping parts off a 'normal range' bike, if you lock up next to less-secure bikes, it's "not bad".

  • In that case, are people happier with Pinheads? Cheers.

  • I haz pinheads. So far so good.

    Off to 'touch some wood'.

  • haha! Hopefully your wheels are still attached to your bike! I'm gonna e-mail the pitlock people and see if they've 'rectified' any weaknesses.

  • i've got the pinhead front track nuts for my beater - problem is they are quite wide (wider than standard track nuts- great design guys!) and won't tighten up due to the lawyer lips on the forks

what are my options? I could file the fork but would rather not, filing the nuts would not work either because of the weird way they are constructed. My only other option was to find some kind of serrated washer the right size to fit between the pinhead and the outside of the fork.

It would be a shame not to be able to use them, and i'd like a theft proof front end so to speak

    any ideas?

  • Throw away the pinheads and use a lock. Simples.

  • ^missing the point somewhat

  • I kind of fancied a wheel lock skewer for one of my frames.

I looked at atomic 22, but at £100 that's not affordable. Is there anything that's worth it for less? Pitlock worth it?

It's simply for when I lock up outside french supermarkets at what, just a bit of extra simple security.

  • I use these at the moment

I can remove these, Atomic 22 and Pitlock in a few minutes without the dedicated tools, but for a trip to the shops Pinhead aren't so pricy.

  • Hello All.

I am sad to say that I have mislaid my pitlock key in a recent house move. Been putting off and putting off doing anything about it, but as you can probably guess this morning the worst happened and I got a front puncture :( After a lot of pushing of my bike, I clearly need to get the wheel off and replace the tube. Does anyone know if there's a way to get the pitlock undone without the key? I notice reference to a few threads about removing with a screwdriver, but they seem to have disappeared :(

Any help greatly appreciated - I am desperate here :(

    Thanks!

  • Did you make a note of the serial? Pitlock can supply a new key.

  • Nope because I am an idiot :( :(

  • If you can find the puncture, just pop the tyre off the rim at the source of the puncture, pull the tube out, patch repair it well, then pop it all back in, inflate and carry on.

An obvious bodge that won't solve your long term problem. I have the answer for that, too, but you'll need to PM me for it.

  • Howard - PM incoming. Patched the tyre well enough to ride the bike today, but as you say, not a long term solution :)

    Thanks

I haz pinheads. So far so good.

    Off to 'touch some wood'.

    Well, you're already online....

  • IS there any definitive word on their new design? Since they added the smooth gradient to the nut in the pit I cant find much online.

  • You... You can see me!?

  • Atomic22 website is gone. Can't seem to find them for sale anywhere. Anyone know what happened?
Thought something like this would be suitable for a Bullitt cargo I'm assembling as the front wheel is a little difficult to D-Lock.
Anyone got a verdict on the kyptonite skewers that require the bike to be upside down? going to be a challenge for someone even if the bike was unlocked tbh.

  • Went bust a few years ago

  • Although they carried on taking orders (and money) without fulfilling them for some time...

  • You might wanna check out hexlox. Just got my first order and the system seems very neat. There's a thread about them on here too
