• Fresh watts is best watts.

  • Like milk?

  • Full of antiwattsidants.

  • Following my previous post, he is selling the Power2max again, eBay item 281729961699. At least he's stated that it's damaged this time. While I was trying to resolve my issue, I emailed P2M about potentially repairing the PM. They won't.

I'd urge people to avoid this like the plague.

The Q rings he is also selling are very worn also.

  • At least he's stated that it's damaged this time.

But lists it as used rather than spares or repair.

    Reported

  • It still works though, right? So it could be used indoors without issue?

  • IIRC 'used' items should only feature cosmetic damage

    From t'bay:

    Used

An item that has been previously used. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or an item that has been returned to the seller after a period of use. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections.

    For parts or not working

An item that does not function as intended or is not fully operational. This includes items that are defective in ways that render them difficult to use, items that require service or repair, or items missing essential components. See the seller’s listing for full details.

  • Fair enough.

  • It'll be on BikeRadar next week

  • This is exactly what I quoted at him when he got funny first time around. He replied saying it was obviously damaged in the post, despite having forced two big self tappers in to hold on the battery cover. Hmm

  • Anyone else find that the fitness/freshness charts in TP and strava are completely unrepresentative of how knackered they feel? As far as I can see I can kill myself for 2hours doing Z4 intervals and have legs like jelly but I am 'fresher' and it contributes less to 'fitness' than if I did a 3hr Z2 ride.

This seems to mean that I am less 'fit' after 2 months speed work than I was at the end of my winter base phase - in effect jellifying my legs is detraining.

  • This is a limitation I've seen as well. Apparently a 4hr 100 mile TT is less load than a 5.5hr 100 mile road bike ride.

  • Perhaps you were not truely doing Z2 or Z4?

To compare two of my rides:

    Z1/2: 4hrs/ 112 Training Impulse

    Z3/4: 2hrs/ 144 Training Impulse

  • That'll be with power though? I expect @AdsH will be using HR TSS/Strava Suffer Score.

Should add my TT was with Power TSS, 5.5hr with HR TSSm so obviously a limitation there.

  • All with power and using TSS

    Z2 8hr/NP 225W/Av HR Z2.6/ Work 3,861KJ = TSS 349

    Z4 6hr/NP 265W/Av HR Z4.3/Work 3,871KJ = TSS 296

Top ride didn't need any recovery really, bottom one took nearly a week to get over - it was true!

  • well, technically you were doing more work per hr in z4, but I agree it should be a lot more notable.

  • Forgetting the numbers for a second, it depends on lots of stuff - how fresh were you going into each? Temperature? I've found same distance/duration rides can effect me during the week longer if I let myself get too dehydrated or don't eat as much. Recovery? Did you do the same thing after both? Life stress - were you more active at work? Getting less sleep? Financial troubles, love life troubles - all that shit can change physiological factors. There's a tonne more stuff that could change your feelings post ride.

That extra 40W of power spikiness could've made the difference to your dead legs. They're long rides so you could've been hitting harder shorter efforts, bringing up NP and doing more muscle damage but slowing down elsewhere so your KJ are similar at the end of both.

What's the IF for both rides?

  • 8hr Z2 IF = .66
    6hr Z4 IF = .7
Both from TP with same FTP.

Agree on the other factors (and I am tired/stressed) but looking back intense intervals knock me about much more than much longer steadier state.

  • Isn't that what you'd expect?

  • Yeah it is what I would expect but the fact that the TP chart doesn't reflect that and the IFs being so similar etc sort of makes me doubt the whole IF/TSS concept.

  • Anyone used http://www.trainsharpcyclecoaching.co.uk for power meters? I placed an order with them last week, but they've been going to voicemail the past few days and haven't responded to my emails.

[Edit: they've responded now and my order is on its way to them from Germany. Clearly "in stock" is a bit misleading].

  • What's the sellers name? Just first name, don't give is whole real name out.

  • IF is a red herring. I ignore it really. Once you get over a few hours it fails to tell the picture of what a ride was like. Look at overall TSS and TSS/h.

    What's your PMC look like?

2h w Z4 intervals should come out around 140TSS minimum.
    3h Z3 Should come out around 150TSS.

    The first ride is 70TSS/h
    The second is 50TSS/h

One is clearly easier than the other. Hard intervals are hard. And it will take longer to recover, irrespective of overall TSS figure sometimes.
It's easy to build fatigue or TSS numbers if you want, but quality work is what counts.

Also I forgot to add, fatigue from a ride depends totally on what you've done it days before. If you've fresh, then a ride with X watts will be cool. But do that same ride 3 times and you'll be too tired to hit X watts or near it.

  • Thanks - seems to chime pretty much exactly with what my body is telling me and those TSS figures match.

PMC looks like this. Winter base miles until March starting from a month of complete rest. Followed by intervals with periodic long rides, last dip is a deliberate taper.
