Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Just because it's about 50% bullshit, it doesn't mean it doesn't work.
There's a proposition I can get behind.

plays old age top trumps
I can remember when training and racing on HR was the big thing, which coincided rather precisely with the arrival of commercial, portable HR meters. I'm pretty sure the first person to come up with a successful bicycle odometer tried to flog mileage counting as the be-all and end-all of training programmes. You'll all be throwing out your power meters as soon as somebody comes up with portable instantaneous measurement of a meaningful biochemical parameter.

And why should any of this stop people using the tech? My coach has used Wko and its metrics to quite successfully plan years of racing for me. It's far better than going ' I did 4 hours, fast' and hoping coachie poo has any idea. Old age doesn't get you points it just makes you scared of change.

No, it makes me sceptical about some of the more inflated claims, because I'm old enough to have seen them before.
As far as I can see, once you drill down through all the pseudo-science and TLAs which are mostly marketing, there are a few simple things which people are trying to measure with power meters.
- Is this thing faster than that thing?¹
- Am I faster now than I was last time I checked?²
- Am I training enough?³
- Am I training too much?³
- Can I sustain this pace until the end of this race?⁵
¹A power meter is pretty much indispensable, field testing is the final confirmation of the effectiveness of CFD and wind tunnel work, and absolutely requires accurate measurement of the input power.
²A power meter is the correct tool to answer this question, although on its it won't tell you whether you were actually under the same stress for each test.
³Power metering is getting increasingly distant from what you actually want to measure, which is your physiological response to training.
⁵The closer you get to your actual capability, the less likely it is that your power meter will give the correct answer. - Is this thing faster than that thing?¹

You could borrow my rear wheel for a track session Dan, note the TSS and use that as an estimate for populating your PMC.
-
• #2109
I might take you up on that. Would love to work out what race-effort wattages are needed for training too.

Just let me know, I've got a 15T you'll probably want to put on instead of the 18T so bring a chain whip (just in case I forget).
In other news- my fucking SRM had a couple of dropouts today, whilst the Powertap has been behaving all week.

Cheers. Unlikely in the coming week as I'm only going to be at the track for Monday night, and then going to Ventoux the following week (gulp).

Now - does anyone have a Powertap wrench I can borrow?
You should own one if you're going to be using a PT. Just buy one with your spare cover..
Absolutely, and I've ordered one from a store in the US.
In the mean time, does anyone have one that I can borrow?

Is there an idiots guide to Training Peaks somewhere?

Use 'Device agent' to upload stuff to Your calender. Which is where everything is kept. Then build up Your dashbord With the table and Charts you want to use.
The performance chart is the one most People want. But it tends to only tell me I need to Train more when life wont allow it, or Train less, when I'm in the middle of a busy period. Cant say I've ever changed my behavior because of what its told me.
It Worth spending time setting Power zones, and HR zones. Having a ride broken Down into time spent in each zone is pretty useful.

There are guides on the site. But thats for how to use the data more than how to generate it IMHO.

Just get a coach and let them worry about it..

It is euph-tastic.
In WKO you can add estimated TSS scores to a workout (I use HR zone calculated TSS if not used PM) else you can just throw in something based on RPE.
I know TP automatically generates HR based TSS scores* if you do use a HR monitor
*at least on a week free trial of premium it did.
