  • You know he signed some ladys boobs at the tour last year. Hardly new stuff from him.
He's young, so what really, just a laugh, a silly one but just a laugh.

But year, I've never got podium girls. Just old and wrong.

  • He's young, he's just...

    oh dear.

  • It's tradition.

There are various idiotic traditions in cycling and elsewhere.

There was a sad part in the Milan - San Remo documentary that was posted here a couple of weeks ago, in which one of the podium girls (for Giro, I think), who was an excellent athlete in her own right, talked about the difficulty of being a female professional cyclist.

Now, I'm sure that there are lots of individuals who wouldn't mind doing what the podium girls do (I wouldn't), but surely it is pretty damn archaic to think that you can only do the job if you are a young female of a particular shape and size.

  • He is a bike rider. If you want a role model look elsewhere (though I don't know where).

Boonen is out of Paris-Roubaix. I hope Phinney wins (but acknowledge this wont happen).

  • I know she's been mentioned, but Marianne Vos' win should also be noticed:

To my reckoning Sagan speaks very little English. I seriously doubt he would have worn the sameT shirt in Slovak or Italian.

He's 23 going on 15. Judge him harshly if you want, but he's just enjoying life, good on him I say. I wasn't sure about the celebrations at first, but he does it without a shread of arrogance and with a refreshing youthful exuberance. Podium girls are morally ambiguous but in line with a general cultural norm. If you don't like it, start a campaign and I'll sign up, but Sagan is kid, and daft as a brush to boot. He's good value, enjoy him.

  • Oh and while I doubt promotional modelling has a union, there'd be a lot of people looking for jobs if it was outlawed.

    #jussayin

  • I'll just leave this here..

  • Jimmy_Fingers makes a fair point about Sagan and I kinda agree with him about the Slovak just being a bit of a child but it is a fact that today's Tour of Flanders unfortunately showcased cycling's complete lack of regard for female sport and women in general. Marianne Vos winning her first Flanders title should have been a big, big story yet it wasn't even on TV, then Sagan pinching the arse of a podium girl who wasn't even giving him a congratulatory peck on the cheek further showed up the archaic side of the sport.

All this detracted from a great wins from two great champions of the sport, Cancellara and Vos.

Televise womens cycling and get rid of podium girls or at least give women's winners two scantily clad male models to give them the treatment that the blokes get

  • I think everyone should be naked, all the time.

  • I think everyone should be naked, all the time.

  • I think everyone should be naked, all the time.

There's a guy a couple of houses down the road from me, he should never be naked, trust me...

  • Sigh!

  • Dick move

having podium girls is a dick move

Both of these. Sagan, so I am dissapoint.

  • Dear Sunday Times,

He [Sagan] needs to grow up, stop pinching podium girl's bums, pulling wheelies at the finish line and generally being unpredictable and entertaining. Yours Mr Mad in Suburbia

p.s. the legs on those podium girls got me feeling quite frisky. Mrs Mad in Suburbia sends her thanks. Ohh err

    Yours sincerely,

    Mr and Mrs Mad

    Sorry what?

  • Except I can't see Canc actually ever beating Sagan, unless he manages to gap him, which is unlikely

OK so I'm a week late to the party but this was the first post to appear when I clicked on the thread and so worthy of quoting.

It was awesome seeing Fabian actually getting away from the field and creaming it instead of being forced into his usual role of leadout man for a.n.others team's eventual winner.

  • ^this. as usual he got stuck on the front when he lit it up (with sagan and for a short while chavanel). i'm always pleased when he has the engine to shake off the followers
