What chainrings are people running on Sram compact cranksets for SSCX?
-
• #1803
i got the 39t ring that came with the chainset.

Innerrings are often pretty good singlespeed chainrings. They have tall teeth and most often no ramps or chaincatchers which is what you want.

Ah yeah, that's a good idea.
I'm not averse to buying new though. I just don't have a clue what the options are for 110 bcd cranks.

Stronglight Durals are pretty good. No ramps or pins, cheap, hardwearing and readily available in a wide variety of teeth and bcds.

I have a BMX chain ring on mine, if you want 1/8th, they are 110bcd
-
• #1808
Look at Thorn, SJS sell em. 110bcd, 5 bolt. Just bought one to fit on rival cranks.

Stronglight Durals are...hardwearing.
Not my experience. Hard to beat for the money though.
Surly stainless SS have to be the best? Then the Thorn if the weight is an issue?

Thanks guys. Since I just sold my omniums and replaced them with rival compacts, I was worrying I might have made a bad decision...

I'm the same as Negaatio - 39t inner ring. I have a 42t thorn ring cuz Howard said they were good, just haven't got round to fitting it!

No need for steel. 2-3 times as heavy and more expensive. Alu is cheap as.

I'd like to go for something blingy. But really I'd just like to go for something 110bcd, 1/8 wide. It seems that I'm asking too much?

Which one - and from where?

Which one - and from where?
Sugino bmx rings are 110bcd I think.
Pretty sure it's a 44t Sugino I'm running on my Pomp with compact ht2s.
Ebay or AlansBMX would be your best shout.

Any reason for 1/8" chain?

Got mine from e-bay, cheap and cheerful

Any reason for 1/8" chain?
I own a bunch of 1/8 fixed sprockets and a couple of freewheels already... Otherwise no.

Ring doesn't need to be 1/8 th. Can run 3/32 ring with a 1/8th chain, did it for a couple of years on my Day One without a problem. Don't limit yerself to 1/8.

In hhsb-genre I understand the interest towards flashy and cool chainrings but fail to see the reason to get anything for sscx if you already have a small ring that works.
-
• #1822
^ and this. Who gives a fook how blingy yer chainring is when it's covered in mud.
-
• #1823
^^ unless it's helping keep a chain on. SS rings have taller teeth.

Wolf tooth do these if you want something blingy
Really wouldn't refer to them as 'blingy' at all - very no-nonsense and functional, and not entirely unlike the Blackspire chainrings that became so popular in MTB ~10 years ago. Blackspire do a deep-tooth ring too btw, it's called the MonoVeloce.
Really could have done with one when I ran a 1x9 setup on my old 'dale. That thing threw a chain every now and again. -

I'm not thinking bling for bike porn points.
The wolf tooth stuff is good I think, although probably overkill for SS setups. I can totally see the point of the taller teeth for 1*n geared bikes.
Ideally I would like a 110bcd 48tooth ring in 1/8, to replicate the gearing I have currently (48*19) for riding on the road. I would then be able to choose from multiple options for a smaller 'ring for SSCX use.
The question is, am I looking for something that simply doesn't exist in the UK? I see that Fyxo will machine a custom chainring to the specs I've outlined above, and at something like $100 AUS it doesn't seem at all unreasonable. But they're in Australia, and I'm not. http://shop.fyxo.co/custom-chainring-silver/
Great in the sand !!!
